Five men pulled off a $150,000 con job at S'pore casino

Like a scene from a movie, five men worked together to cheat the casino at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore of S$150,000.

But the loot did not get a chance to grow and they were soon arrested.

Bai Qipei, 25, a delivery man, was sentenced to five months’ jail today for two cheating offences, Channel NewsAsia reported.

He was the last of the five men to be sentenced.

The others were Ho Boon Keat, 29, who was jailed three years, Ang Chee Peng, 28, jailed two-and-a-half years, Toh Kaida, 29, jailed two years and Benson Ho, 25, jailed 14 months.

Citing court documents, Channel NewsAsia reported that the offences were committed between July and August 2011. The five-man syndicate had more than 30 counts of cheating among them.

Ho was the mastermind, and he was working at the casino as a surveillance operator. When he was on duty, his accomplices would stake out the Sic Bo table.

Sic Bo is a game of rolling three dice and gamblers may win up to 180 times their bet if all dice display the same number.

Whenever three similar numbers came up, an accomplice at the table would claim to have placed a bet of S$25.

Ho would then confirm this with the pit manager when asked to check video footage.

For his role, Bai received S$800 of the illegal proceeds before their scam was uncovered.

He was part of a betting scam that cost Marina Bay Sands casino about $150,000 between July and August last year.

On Friday, Bai Qipei, 25, was sentenced to five months' jail on two counts of cheating.

The deliveryman was the last of five men to be dealt with. His four accomplices - Benson Ho, 25, Toh Kaida, 29, Ang Chee Peng, 28, and Ho Boon Keat, 29 - were jailed from 14 months to 3 years.

They ran their scam on Sic Bo, a game where three dice are rolled. If all the dice show the same number, gamblers can win up to 180 times their bet.

The con: An accomplice would claim to have placed a $25 bet after a triple appeared. Then Ho, the surveillance operator, would be called to check the footage. He would lie and say the bet had been placed.
