In western Japan, local fishermen say a giant squid measuring nearly three and a half meters long has been caught alive in a fishing net.
According to the state fishing cooperative Tottori, the squid was caught off the region's coast, when fishermen were trawling for flatfish and crabs.
Even though it was caught alive, the squid died before reaching shore. According to the San'in Kaigan Nature Museum in Tottori, the squid could have measured around eight meters if its tentacles had been intact.
The museum said giant squids usually inhabit deep sea waters between 300 meters to 1500, but this one was caught at 200 and forty meters under water.
