First CDF says NS is an accepted way of life

what hogwash. put it as an option to serve and you see who accepted it as a way of life. has this man got shit for brains?

He has a Master of Arts in Military History.

my experiment to allow folks to choose to serve or not remains open to testing and verification. NS is not an accepted way of life. challenge accepted? :D:D:D

can you do a large sample survey

if it were an accepted way of life, folks would gladly take up the cause and serve their time with pride. then, whereof the need for conscription? face it, military conscription is no different from modern day slavery putting unwilling folks in barracks to serve time. the folks whom love the army life, and thinking it is an accepted way of life, belongs to the minority :D:D:D

how to defend Singapore then?

in any living organism, as much as the fight for survival is vital. the immunity system kicks in only upon invasion of foreign particles. much as some viruses would masquerade and hide inside a host cell, the surface membrane protein usually leave a tell-tale sign signalling penetration and thus triggering an immune response. the body then depends on the memory T-cells to generate a series of responses to mop up the damage. good to note that white leucocytes count is relatively low during non-combative periods and only peak upon activation.

the military in this case is like the memory T-cells. churning up appropriate response as and when required. the response team of other white leucocytes would be the ordinary citizens taking the call to arms only when needed. when mixed signals are given, how do you expect the citizens to response? Singapore is close to being United Nations already, the only aliens and/or foreigner will be from outer space! how to defend Singapore? invite the offensive party to be our foreign talent lah!:eek::eek:

We could only have a capable armed force through National Service (NS). Singapore could not, and cannot, afford to raise and maintain a non-conscript armed force of sufficient strength without bankrupting our economic workforce.
:

This was the usual justification for NS but that was the situation then when we just gotten our independence and the economy was weak to sustain a regular army. Now we are a developed country and the govt is rich. The old justification doesn't hold any ground at present day. It either we abolish NS and hire regular soldiers or pay our NS boys regular pay instead of NS allowance.

a professional army is definitely required, both well equipped and well trained. size can be kept relatively small of about 50K~55K dedicated folks.

One bomb would kill us all given our small space that we occupy as compared to our 'big' neighbouring countries. :D

conventional warfare methods may damage infrastructures. think of biological weapons, say a man with flu-like symptoms, or worse, a seemingly healthy individual passing through our immigration counters. a carrier of infectious disease or sorts. couple that with a growing population density.

Ns is there to feed the generals n mindef leechers. If no ns. These generals would b on the street.
