What difference is that with ang more companies who retrench people just before Xmas? And actually I use Firefox...it's more stable than IE. Sad that it might go under soon

Those who are working in IT space in Taiwan should be aware that elevated retrenchments have been ongoing for a long time. Taiwan has neither cost nor competency advantage when it comes to IT manpower, the last bastion in Hi-Tech over there now is contract manufacturing, even then I'm not so sure they can survive in the next 5-10 years seeing how even their own companies are uprooting and setting up HQs overseas aggressively.

Actually fuckienland can compete on labour cost. The average wage for a graduate is 1k sing a month n still have to pay tax. Tat why alot of them ending up in Singkieland or ah tiong land etc looking for work.

S$1k starting salaries sounds low, but we also need to take into account that other then the top few universities in TW that are of barely acceptable standards, most of them are really just degree mills. They are the equivalent of Singapore's diploma grads at best. That sort of standard Chennai has a lot of 'university grads' asking for less than S$700 in the IT industry.

A lot of these so called uni grads from Taiwan head to mainland taking up non-exec jobs, i.e. 'tailao' a.k.a blue collar laborers. The most well known example in Singapore is that of the Cisco security guards / auxiliary police of Taiwan origin, add in bonus, incentive, OT etc. ~S$2k for what is essentially a N/O Level job, but still it's a lot more then what they can get back home.

Yup. Tat is why Taiwan is becoming the pinoyland of East Asia. Most of their people have to work overseas to earn a living. N to think Taiwan at one time had a high standard of living. Heaps of them also go to Australia on back packer visa..but now that the is gahmen is taxing them..the numbers r declining too... Taiwan is becoming a shit hole too..degree mills can only go so far..

Mozilla is shutting down the group behind Firefox OS

Mozilla is shutting down its “connected devices” group, which was responsible for the failed smartphone operating system Firefox OS and, more recently, attempts to build the OS into devices like routers, streaming boxes, and even basic computers.

CNET first reported the news, saying that “about 50 people” are being laid off from the company. Ari Jaaksi, who’s been in charge of Mozilla’s connected devices unit for a little over two years, is also said to be leaving.

“IoT is clearly an emerging technology space, but it’s still early.”
Mozilla confirmed that it was cutting positions in a statement to The Verge. The company said it would shift its focus to researching new technologies for connected devices and “step back from a focus on launching and scaling commercial products.”

To some extent, this dissolution of Mozilla’s connected devices group feels like it’s been a long time coming. Mozilla has had no luck when it comes to mobile, and it hasn’t been clear what benefits Firefox could bring to routers and other connected devices that existing platforms couldn’t offer.

With Mozilla being controlled by a nonprofit, its ability to offer a strong alternate platform could have had a meaningful impact on how major players in the connected devices space decide to deal with privacy.

But Mozilla’s initiative to get Firefox inside of connected devices never really got off the ground. It gave up on putting Firefox OS into phones back in late 2015, and began shifting over to “exploring the IoT market” last year — making some layoffs in the process. Whatever came of that effort never made it to the public.

For its part, Mozilla still believes it could find a role in the growing ecosystem of connected devices. “IoT is clearly an emerging technology space,” the company says, “but it's still early.”
