Fired to be replaced by FT

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out--
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me--and there was no one left to speak for me.

.....who did he vote for???

Just because he was there for 6 years doesn't mean he's any good. When I was in the corporate world, I regularly fired deadwood that had been hanging around doing bugger all for years on end.

The problem with some managers is that they feel sorry for such people and tolerate poor performance because they don't want to break rice bowls.

However, tolerating poor performance is not only counterproductive for the organisation, it's also unfair to those who are performing well and earning their keep.

I'm all for culling those who aren't worth the salary they're being paid. It's a dog eat dog world out there. Singaporeans have to learn to face reality. They have been mollycoddled for far too long.

You assume he is deadwood? Who knows?

Sinkees don't mind the competition. Just don't undercut. Even in the market place, there is regulation against unfair pricing. And foreign imports are unfairly priced.

There is NO reason why foreign imports should be 50 percent cheaper than locals. SME should be made to pay a levy that will bring their cost of importing foreigners to at least 90 percent the cost of hiring a local. The levy will be used for the training of locals.

in the other thread, some boss gave their employee rolex watch after 10 years of service.
Did you gave your employee any rolex?

No company is going to fire an employee who's an asset.

There is no reason why locals should be more expensive than imports. Since when has heaven mandated that being "Singaporean" entitles you to a higher salary than other equally capable people from around the globe?

people get fired for all the worng resasons all the time

cannot kiss ass

cannot click with the boss, all these are petty reasons people get fired for...

it not so simple to say that if you are a good worker, you will be recognsied and promotoed

You can't call them "wrong" reasons. Life is not black and white. It's many shades of grey. The issue is whether or not the reasons are valid and this all depends upon where the management hierarchy the person is employed.

At CEO and higher management level, politics, differing visions, personality clashes can all result in termination and anyone who is employed at that level is well aware of this. If the VP of engineering and the CEO have different views regarding which direction the company should take, it's a foregone conclusion that one or the other will have to go and rank has its advantages in such a scenario.

At direct labor level, if I have a production operator who can work 20% faster than the rest of the team, I'm not going to fire him/her despite the fact that the worker may be a bit of a nut job. However, if the behavior affects the rest of the team negatively, then the final outcome might still be dismissal.

They should give me a Rolex for paying them a salary on time, every month.

Yes!...they give you the ROLL out of the company & you become instantly an EX employee...that is the ROLLEX you get!.

I was in the corporate world too, getting rid of dead wood is not an issue of breaking people's rice bowls, you are useless, you are & have to go. But the point of the entire grumbling is, many of us SINgaporeans are unfairly muscled out of the jobs, restricted in their search for one & shunned. But the blame, still lies squarely with these SINgaporeans too,to be fair in the argument, they behave like king of hill & very demanding, do not want to assume a lower than expected position based on their qualification. That is only some of the issues, the other thing would whom did they vote for, or their parents??

On the other hand, the people in charge of the country should shoulder the bulk of the blame, but not restricting the number of FT's in every sector of the economy & not checking thoroughly their qualifications & allowing the employers to take in these FT's like, turning on a tap.

In short, the average SINgapore worker, is like an ancient dinosaur, that refuses to change with the time & whom did they vote & believe in??

Now not easy and also very costly to hire FT.
Levy will increase $50~$100 every 6 month per head.
So per FT worker levy will increase and reaching $1k/month in next 2 year.
So each worker will cost $1k levy and about another $300/month for the hostel.
So is not cheap.

Yup the landscape has changed and the adaptable will survive and prosper while those who keep harping on the good old days will die natural deaths.

Complaining constantly about the PAP won't change a thing. Neither would voting the PAP out.

If the WP took over, they'd soon have to fact the harsh reality that the world is a very competitive place and that what worked before can't be replicated in today's environment. The policies they'd have to put in place to ensure Singapore's survival wouldn't differ much from what we have now.
