A fire broke out at a construction site located near Tanjong Pagar MRT station at around 6 pm on Thursday (3 Mar).

According to the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), “(The) Fire involved construction materials and was extinguished by SCDF using 2 water jets.”

Smoke was seen coming out from the ground floor of the construction site, near to International Plaza.

An engineer who was working at the site, Lei Cong said that he saw the incident happened before his eyes.

Lei, who was on the ground level said that workers were doing some welding work on the upper level of the construction site.

“It was windy and sparks were blowing all over the place. I saw some sparks blowing towards some Styrofoam boxes on the ground.

"The boxes caught fire and it spread quickly,” said Lei who is working for Soligen, the company who is carrying out the construction at the site.

Another worker, Mahabul Alam said he was standing outside the construction area when he saw smoke.

He said he was afraid and ran away.

Khin Mya Lwen, who works at a shop located directly opposite the construction site said she heard some shouting at around 6 pm.

“When I turned around I saw the fire. I quickly stayed inside of my shop and closed the shutters,” she said.

Yahoo Singapore saw a man in a security uniform telling people that the Tanjong Pagar MRT station was closed and to walk to the Raffles Place station.

Yahoo Singapore understands that one particular exit of the Tanjong Pagar MRT station was simply temporarily closed for safety purposes.
