OPINION
It was reported in the Straits Times a few days ago that fewer foreigners were given Singapore PRs and citizenships in the last 12 months.
There was a drop in the number of PRs by almost 20,000, but the decrease in the number of new citizens is minimal.
“The growth in the number of new immigrants in recent years was because we wanted to take advantage of the strong economy to attract and retain suitable foreigners to sink roots here, and to augment our population,” said Prof Ho Peng Kee, the second minister for Home Affairs.
Due to the PAP’s liberal immigration and pro-foreigner policies, foreigners now make up 36 percent of Singapore’s population, up from 14 percent in 1990. Of the remaining 64 percent who are citizens, an increasing number are born overseas.
“The Government recognises and understands Singaporeans’ concerns and sentiments over the rapid increase in numbers. We have reviewed our immigration framework to better manage the pace and overall numbers,” Prof Ho added.

Gabriel Tham:
“Too little too late. they should start re-reviewing past PRs and citizenships to kick out some.”
Adrian Ow:
“The elections are surely coming. But wat is to stop them from reverting back to their liberal immigration policies again once the election is over. Fellow Singaporeans, let us be not so daft. Vote for real change, not this type of “last minute, hug Buddha’s legs tactic.”
Loke Yu Ming:
“What reasons did SMS Ho give for this change, given that our economy is improving and that the large intake in the past was to boost our economy? Without a proper account for this policy change, Citizens will be sceptical of the govt’s commitment to lower this intake and the foreigners will feel unsettled.
The govt must communicate more effectively and learn from the recent widespread anxiety over the Edu Minister’s “Wrong Impression” given which resulted in the majority race feeling suspicious of the govt’s policy intent and the minority races feeling sidelined and indignant that too much attention is paid to a single race.”
Anthony Yeo:
“We want citizens not PR… they sell their houses and can retire back their countries, but we can’t…. they can rent out their houses and use the rental to sustain their living in their own countries, but we can’t…”
Tan Wei Yap:
“I never gonna trust what they say again. As what the previous post mentioned 6.5 mil still stands. More foriegn workers equate to Lower cost of labour that drives a wrong perspective of a higher GDP.”
K Y Ang:
“I believe that after election when the PAP won again, they will go back to their old ways. LHL already said he will increase the population to 6.5 million, so they will continue to increase the number of foreigners then give them PR and hopefully they become citizen.
It is a foregone conclusion, we cannot throw out the PAP overnight so they are bound to continue to rule Singapore, but we can let as many oppositions go into the parliament by voting for the oppositions, this will decrease the parliamentary seatings of PAP. Only then will the arrogant PAP administration listened to the people.
Every elections if we continue to vote for more opposition to go into the parliament, then our dream of a 2 party system will come true. No need half-half, opposition take 1/3 of the seatings is enough.”
Chen Wenfa:
“If gahmen pass the next election test ‘relatively easy’ AGAIN, the inflow will ‘restart’ – although it never ended/reversed. just protest and show by voting – IF u have the chance anyway under GRC, statistics can mislead, we welcome talented foreigners that do top management jobs that our local people cannot do – like what happened in the 70s and 80s …with education level much improved here since, FT should be more stringent, NOT more relaxed.”
