RWS croupier pleads guilty to charges
by Shaffiq Alkhatib 05:55 AM Jan 04, 2011

SINGAPORE - A Taiwanese croupier from the Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) casino pleaded guilty yesterday to converting cash chips worth more than $110,000 for her own use between September and November.

Chiu Yee-Fong, 31, also admitted that she had some $11,000 worth of casino cash chips in her dormitory on Oct 21.

She committed the offences with an alleged accomplice, her boyfriend, Kow Jiang Siung. The 28-year-old Malaysian has yet to be charged.

Chiu's crimes came to light after a surveillance shift manager at the casino informed the police on Nov 7 that she had taken cash chips.

Two chips - valued at $500 each - were later found on her. Police officers also seized 18 casino chips worth nearly $8,000 and a bank transaction receipt from her locker at work.

Chiu escorted them to her dormitory later that afternoon where they found various items, including $9,000 in cash.

Deputy Public Prosecutor John Lu said investigations revealed Chiu had helped herself to cash chips inside the casino 144 times. She would hand the chips over to Kow, who would then encash the chips and hand her the money.

The court heard that Chiu had made full restitution.

Chiu, who could be jailed up to 15 years and fined, will be sentenced next Monday.
