FURIOUS that his young daughter had lied to him about stealing at school, a 34-year-old man poured hot water over her to teach her a lesson she would not forget. After he had done this, he caned the nine-year-old for lying and stealing, stopping only when her stepmother intervened. On Monday, the slim-built self-employed man, who was left as a single father after his wife walked out when the girl was five days old, admitted in court to scalding his daughter on July 10. It was only six days later that she was allowed to go back to school, where her teacher noticed the peeling wound on her face and called in the authorities. The child was hospitalised for 17 days for burns on her left cheek, waist, right arm and the front of her body.
She also had cane marks on her left upper arm and back.

A MAN splashed hot water onto his nine-year-old daughter in the kitchen toilet for telling lies and stealing CashCards. The 34-year-old self-employed man admitted to causing hurt to the victim with a heated substance on July 10. The parties cannot be named as there is a gag order. Deputy Public Prosecutor Ang Feng Qian said the accused became angry when he found out that his Primary 4 daughter had lied about borrowing 50 cents from a teacher to buy an exercise book, and having three correction tapes in her bag. To teach the girl a lesson so that she would never dare to steal again, he threatened to pour hot water on her left hand which she had used to steal the items. When she retorted back, he chased her and splashed hot water on her body. He also took a stainless steel mug of boiled water from the stove and splashed it over the kitchen bathroom door. When the girl admitted stealing two CashCards from his van, the father got angrier and caned her on the hand and back until her stepmother intervened. The incident was reported by a school counsellor on July 17. The victim was warded in hospital for 17 days and is now under foster care. District Judge Hamidah Ibrahim adjourned sentencing to Oct 28 for reports from MCYS and a psychologist . The maximum penalty is a jail term of up to seven years or fine, or caning.
