SEREMBAN - A father and son are on trial for murder in Malaysia after allegedly killing a robber who broke into a house where they were staying, local media reported on Wednesday.

Malaysian Mo Yi Hong, a 56-year-old chef, and his son Wei Qiang, 28, are accused of causing the death of Mr Chen Wen Bao on Feb 24.

The elder Mo and his Singaporean wife, Ms Guo Shu Lan, have lived in Singapore for many years. They also have a daughter.

The family returns to Negeri Sembilan every year during Chinese New Year to visit friends and relatives, and the incident happened during their trip back this year.

Chen and an accomplice entered the house where the Mo family was staying late at night on Feb 24, according to the Kwong Wah Daily News.

Allegedly, Chen slashed Ms Guo with a knife but the family fought back and in the ensuing fracas, Chen was killed. His accomplice fled.

Ms Guo was injured and required 25 stitches on her arm.

In interviews with the Malaysian media, Ms Guo said that her husband and her son were acting in self defence. She also claimed that Chen was conscious when they tied him up, and it is not clear how he died.

Mo and his son could be sentenced to death if they are found guilty.

Both have pleaded not guilty and the case will be heard again on April 30, Nanyang Siang Pau reported.

BY CHANG MAY CHOON

A Singaporean woman whose husband and son are facing murder charges in Malaysia for allegedly killing a robber who slashed her has bemoaned the lack of justice.

Madam Guo Shu Lan, whose left arm was injured in the attack and required 25 stitches, insisted that her Malaysian husband Mo Yi Hong, 56, and son Mo Wei Qiang, 28, did not kill Chen Wen Bao, Nanyang Siang Pau newspaper reported.

The father and son pleaded not guilty to murder charges in court on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters outside the court, Madam Guo claimed that her husband and son only pinned down the man and he was still conscious and able to talk before she and her husband left the house to go to the hospital.

She said her husband only found out that the man had died when he went back home about 15 minutes later to get his handphone to take pictures of her injuries for insurance claims.

"I was being robbed and my husband and son tried to protect me, but they ended up being charged for murder. Where's the justice in this?" she was cited as saying by the Chinese-language newspaper.

Guang Ming Daily reported that Madam Guo was unhappy with the murder charges and kept repeating the Chinese words "mei you tian li", which means "no justice".

The incident happened on Feb 24 when Madam Guo and her family were visiting her husband's family in Negeri Sembilan over the Chinese New Year holidays. Her family live in Singapore, and they also have a daughter.

Madam Guo said she was confronted by a masked man just as she was stepping into the house that night, after going out to buy supper with her husband.

"He dashed over to snatch my bag and I tried to resist, screaming for my husband to come and help," she said. She believed that her actions provoked the man who then slashed her with a knife.

Madam Guo said her husband picked up a water pipe and fought with the man, and neighbours also helped subdue him. She added that her son, who was already asleep, was awoken by her cries and came out to help.

The attacker was subsequently found dead, lying on the ground with his hands and legs tied up with rope. It is not clear how he died.

The police who were called to the scene found a 45cm-long parang, two stones and broken pieces of a plastic water pipe.

The case will be heard again on April 30, according to media reports. Mo and his son could be sentenced to death if found guilty.

SINGAPORE - Around 100 villagers in the small town of Air Kuning, Negeri Sembilan, had rallied behind a father and son who are facing murder charges for allegedly killing a robber in self-defence, reported Chinese-language newspapers.

They had planned to organise a protest at 5.30pm on Friday in support of Moo He Hong, 59, and his son Moo Wee Keong, 29. But the protest had to be called off at the last minute as the protest organisers did not apply for a police permit, reported Shin Min Daily News.

Out of close to 600 villagers, more than 100 had wanted to attend the protest rally, said Mr Lee Jun Ming, the protest organiser.

"We are outraged by the injustice. They are victims, but now they are being charged for murder. It's not logical," he told Shin Min Daily News.

The father and son were charged in a Malaysian court on Wednesday with the murder of Chan Boon Poh, 42. Both have pleaded not guilty.

Chan had alleged tried to rob Moo's wife, Madam Kuek Soo Lan, in the wee hours of Feb 24. She said he attacked her with a parang, which left slash wounds on her left arm and fingers.

Her husband, according to Madam Kuek, came to her aid and knocked the man to the ground with a pipe. The son also rushed out of the house to help and they tied up the man with some rope.

Moo then drove Madam Kuek, 52, to a clinic to seek treatment, but when he returned to the house 15 minutes later, the robber had died.

She said her husband and son were acting in self-defence and that Chen was conscious when they tied him up. It was not clear how he died, she said.

Madam Kuek and her family live in Singapore and they travelled to Malaysia last month to visit relatives during Chinese New Year. The elder Moo grew up in Air Kuning.

Madam Kuek, a Singaporean, returned to Singapore briefly this week and is now back in Malaysia to find a criminal lawyer for her husband and son, Lianhe Wanbao reported.

Meanwhile, an online petition calling for a fair trial for both men has begun on website Change.org. It has garnered 777 signatures as of Friday evening. There is also an Indiegogo campaign to raise funds for them.

In Singapore, we've a father and son murdered and son dragged under car for long distance yet the murderer is sent to IMH and case goes into thin air.

Is there a protest on the streets? People start online campaigns and raise money for the bereaved to seek justice? Nothing means sinkies is fine with it. And that's why I stay away from sinkies.

Re: Father and son face death penalty for allegedly killing robber who slashed Singap

Death penalty is too excessive. Could have contest the idiot Malaysian laws with self defense and get away lightly with man slaughter. But then again Malaysia are run by dumb people. You can easily die dunno why. Who here still want to migrate and move to cheaper Malaysia? Your life is cheaper there!!!
