SAF and Chinese army in joint exercise

THE Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) began a joint counter-terrorism exercise with China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) here on Thursday.
Cooperation 2010, the second exercise of its kind by the two nations, has 120 personnel from both armies taking part in response drills, exercises on military planning, and seminars.
The focus of the nine-day exercise will be on counter-terrorism security operations for major international events. Both sides will share their experiences in staging large-scale events such as the Beijing Olympics 2008 and this year's Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.
The first such exercise - in June last year - was in Guilin, Guangxi province.
Representing Singapore in this exercise are personnel from the 2nd People's Defence Force (2PDF), Headquarters 1st Singapore Infantry Brigade, the SAF Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Explosive Defence Group, the Medical Response Force, and the Military Police Command.
From China, personnel from the PLA Headquarters, Beijing Garrison and Beijing Military Command, along with its Chemical Defence Regiment, are involved in the exercise at Clementi Camp.
At the opening ceremony yesterday, Brigadier-General Teo Jing Siong, 2PDF's commander, recognised China's potential to contribute to regional security, saying: 'Singapore welcomes China's continued defence exchanges and interactions with our region at the bilateral and multilateral levels, which would help foster cooperation and better understanding between regional militaries.'
China has been in joint training exercises with other countries in the region, such as Australia and Thailand. Engaging the PLA in such interactions could help build bilateral relations with China and cooperation among these countries.
The 'live-fire' exercise between the Royal Australian Navy and the Chinese navy in September was one of the most complex ever carried out with the latter. During the exercise, ships from both forces fired live rounds at set targets out at sea.
