Private childcare fees set by operators

WITH reference to last Friday's letter ('Caught in a bind over childcare fees'; Forum Online), childcare operators are private entities. They may set their own schedule of fees, taking into consideration their cost structures and the market demand for their services.
The Government provides subsidies of $300 and $600 per month for childcare and infant care services respectively for working mothers.
The Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports has also embarked on plans to build 200 more childcare centres by 2013, which will bring on more competition, keep fees affordable and provide more choices for parents.
Parents and operators should bear these points in mind as they choose appropriate centres for their children.
