[h=2]SICC sacks foreign expat GM for his “non-existent” master’s degree[/h]
February 9th, 2012
The Singapore Island Country Club (SICC) has sacked its General Manager, Mr Jean-Pierre Joseph Schneider, for “grave misconduct”.
Mr Schneider, who is a Swiss national, has also been removed from his secretary position in the club.
Mr Schneider was sacked for claiming in his employment application dated Mar 19 last year, that he possessed a “master’s degree in corporate management”. However, according to club president Tay Joo Soon, when Mr Schneider was asked to produce proof, he was unable to do so.
Mr Tay also alleged that Mr Schneider “demonstrated grave misconduct” in relation to the participation of Motion Capture Golf Pte Ltd (MCG) in a tender process. MCG runs the pro-golf shops and manages the driving ranges and golf training for SICC.
Mr Tay added that Mr Schneider had breached not only his employment contract but also the club’s code of ethics.
When Mr Schneider was contacted by the media on Wed night (8 Feb), he expressed disappointment over his dismissal.
Mr Schneider defended himself, “Where the master’s degree was concerned, yes, technically they are correct but the diploma I obtained 25 years ago was the equivalent of a master’s degree by the Swiss Hotel Association.”
“This has been explained clearly before and I was hired for my work experience and background.”
Mr Schneider also said that as far as the MCG issue was concerned, he had been cleared by an audit committee last October.
Mr Schneider had served in the hospitality industries for almost 30 years before joining SICC. He was paid a salary of $30,000 a month in SICC. He is currently seeking legal action to clear his name.
The general committee has appointed retired lawyer Yau Meng Fai as acting general manager until a suitable candidate can be found.
It is not known if the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) bothers to verify the validity of the professional qualifications before granting foreigners employment passes to work in Singapore.
In Sep last year, at least 18 foreign workers from China were sentenced to jail in Singapore for involving in a fake degree scam.
The workers had used forged certificates to obtain work passes to work for T Y Enterprise and Sun Blues Cleaning Maintenance. They were charged “for providing false information to MOM’s employment inspectors”. They had all applied for employment and S passes with “university degrees” in hotel management from Jiangsu, Shandong and Henan universities.
The fake degrees were discovered only when 2 of the workers complained to MOM about their pay issue with the company.
For S pass holder, the worker must have a fixed monthly salary of at least $2,000, and at least a degree or diploma.
Meanwhile, back to SICC, the club president Mr Tay said that more details on the sacking of its ex-GM, Mr Schneider, would be given in due course.
