SINGAPORE: The government is increasing its funding for Public Service Broadcast (PSB) content, in a move to improve its quality and reach.
The Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts said S$630 million will be given over five years.
That's a 35 per cent increase from the S$470 million doled out over the last five-year cycle.
The enhancements are based on recommendations by the PSB Review Panel set up in October 2010.
While the bulk of the funding will go to national broadcaster MediaCorp which will continue to play a key role in the delivery of such content, a portion of these funds can now be tapped by other media platforms, under a new contestable funds scheme set up by the Media Development Authority.
The move comes in the face of a fast changing media landscape where people are getting information from a bigger variety of sources.
