'Foreign workers should get training too', says MP Yeo Guat Kwang

By Lin Wenjian

Foreign workers should get skills upgrading similar to what Singaporeans go through, suggested labour MP Yeo Guat Kwang.

Noting that this would 'create a level playing field' for all workers, he said training and certification for work permit and S Pass holders should be done within the first two years of their employment.

Successful certification should then be used as a condition for work pass renewal, he said.

Mr Yeo, speaking to The Straits Times in his capacity as chairman of the Migrant Workers Centre (MWC), said training could be done in two ways - either through in-house courses conducted by employers, or via the Singapore Workforce Skills Qualifications (WSQ) programme.

If the employer folks out the cash for the Upgrading, Im all fine with it..But defiantly not if its from tax payer's pockets. We pay people to upgrade themselves to compete with us? How absurd.

Look like any suggestion that benefit the FT is a big NO NO , unless it is not using tax payer money.
Shouldn't they the FT be skill to qualify for such job in the first place ?

If "Successful certification should then be used as a condition for work pass renewal", this will ensure 100% of FT here will get retraining , now what about local
if their company do not send them for retaining because there is no such requirement ? WIll the budget for retraining go to more FT than local ?

this Yeo Guat Kwang should walk the talk..he should fund his idea using his own corrupted money..

I've attended some subsidised workforce training courses. They are usually conducted by pro FAP cronies who will sing praises of the ruling party at the course. The courses were a waste of time but because they have secured the contract in bulk, it's big $$$$ for them.
