Singapore will be spending up to $100 million to promote former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew’s new initiative, the Promote Mother Tongue project.
Determined to transform the island republic into a global metropolis and defending his multi-national language strategy, the 87-year-old has initiated the Promote Mother Tongue project which aims to raise an eye-popping $100 million, to be used as a start fund activities for pre-schoolers and later nursery pupils.
Mr Lee has announced that he would donate $12 million while three of his children would each donate S$200,000 to the project, with the Ministry of Education (MOE) matching it dollar-for-dollar up to S$50 million.
Presently a Member of Parliament after stepping down as Minister Mentor in 2011, Mr Lee has reportedly expressed concerns with Singapore’s bilingual future due to the massive influx of foreigners bringing in their own languages and dialects that are incomprehensible to the locals.
Additionally, with the increase in the number of families using English on a regular basis when talking to their young children, Mr Lee feels it is more compelling now to consolidate the learning of the mother tongue.
