The Speak Good English Campaign was somewhat a success as it was promoted aggressively in libraries, bus advertisements and schools.
Due to its origins, Singlish shares many similarities with pidgin varieties of English, and can easily give the impression of "broken English" or "bad English" to a speaker of some other, less divergent variety of English.
As a result, the use of Singlish is greatly frowned on by the government, and two former prime ministers, Lee Kuan Yew and Goh Chok Tong, have publicly declared that Singlish is a substandard English that handicaps Singaporeans, presents an obstacle to learning proper English and renders the speaker incomprehensible to everyone except another Singlish speaker.
Current prime minister Lee Hsien Loong has also said that Singlish should not be part of Singapore's identity.
Many of us have seen a tide of Vietnamese and Burmese in the private sector, SMEs and VWOs because our Prime Minister has signed trade agreements with these countries to flood Singapore with these foreigners.
It takes a lot to understand their type of English which is broken.
Recently, a Vietnamese colleague drafted a few series of emails and many of us cannot even understand what the hell she is talking about. I am unable to reveal the full contents of the email as it is confidential but will give you some snippets.

It's bad grammar, sentence structure errors and vocabulary/ tenses errors all over the place.
"As you decided......."
"As discussion......"

The puzzling thing is that this Vietnamese colleague is on a S-pass who claims to have a degree in finance in her country.
PM Lee needs to come clean with his addiction to these foreigners when there are so many qualified accounting graduates from Kaplan, MDIS, UniSIM, SMU, NTU and polytechnics who can do a better job.

How else to boost the population and fulfill Population White Paper's target?

Also, it doesn't matter if you do a better job... all you need to do is a passable job, so long as your wage is cheap all is forgiven.

Sinkieland has become the sweatshop of white collar jobs, a major outsourcing centre. There is no value to add. Nobody cares about excellence in work. As long as you are cheap, you're hired.

If Lee Hsien Loong gets his way and signs the TPP, things will get worse. Much worse.
