In a letter sent to the media, the family had requested for an inquiry by an independent panel to address some of the late doctor’s concerns about his job.
Responding to a Mindef statement published on March 23, the family said that these concerns “can only be addressed effectively via an inquiry by an independent panel with oversight powers”.
Through the process, they hope to “help bring possible deficiencies to light in order to avert a similar tragedy and pain to other families”, the letter said. (read full article here)
Since the unfortunate passing of Dr Allan Ooi, various speculations have been put forth by the state media about the cause of his suicide, including failed relationships, gaming and gambling.
It is only after his farewell letter to his family and friends was leaked out on the internet that the truth was revealed, prompting MINDEF to write in to the Straits Times Forum to clarify matters. (read MINDEF’s letter here)
Though its official statement is vague and evasive, it does acknowledge the fact that Allan was extremely unhappy with his work, thereby putting other conspiracy theories to rest.
However, I am still appalled that MINDEF has yet to give a proper answer to the questions posed by the family.
