根據刻板印象,不乏心理學研究指出,男性渴望發號施令的硬權力,女性則喜歡合作,本能上了解吸引力與說服力這一類軟權力。美國人傾向以強悍男性形象來形容領導人,但針對領導力的最新研究顯示,曾被視為「娘娘腔」的女性特質,如今看來更有成功的機會。
身處以資訊為基礎的社會,網路正在取代階級制度,而且知識工作者比以往更難馴服。許多機構體制正面臨管理方向的改變,移向「共享式領導」及「下放式領導」,領導者的位置是圓心而非金字塔頂端。Google前執行長施密特便曾說必須「嬌生慣養」他的員工。
就連軍隊也面臨這類轉變。在美國,五角大廈聲稱,陸軍教官「較少對大家咆哮」,「因為新世代對『諮商型』教官的反應比較好。」想要成功打擊恐怖分子與反叛軍的軍事行動,需要士兵們打贏心理戰,而非只是摧毀敵人防禦工事與性命。

過去,女性爭取組織裡最高職位時,通常不得不採取一種「陽剛風格」,違背社會對女性「溫柔細膩」的規範認知。但如今,隨著資訊革命以及民主要求,更有參與感和更有效率的領導力,「女性特質」正成為一條途徑。為了獲致成功,男性不但要懂得尊重其女性同事的這項風格,更要精通這項技巧。
在以資訊為基礎的社會中,性別的刻板印象正漸漸被打破,但,把資訊時代領導者所須具備的新風格,簡單歸類為「女人當家」卻是錯的。對女性、男性及有效領導而言,即使是積極的刻板印象,都不是好事。
檢視領導者時應該更關注其在組織、團體、國家或網路中鼓勵參與的表現,而非英雄式的指揮命令。怎樣才是最適風格,亦即該硬的時候硬、該軟的時候軟,對男性與女性同等重要,不應受到傳統對性別的既定印象蒙蔽。在某些情況下,男性需要展現出「女人心」,又在某些時候,女性要更「像個男人」。
