January was Australia's hottest month in more than a century – and the sweltering temperatures are not over yet.

As temperature records tumbled across the country, Victorians experienced one of our hottest and driest Januaries since records began.

All-time temperature records were broken in northern Victoria on January 25, when Kerang reached a sweltering 47.6 degrees and Swan Hill hit 47.5 degrees.

And the state received less than 20 per cent of the average rainfall for January.

Official figures revealed the mean monthly temperature around the country exceeded 30 degrees for the first time.

Bureau of Meteorology senior climatologist Dr Andrew Watkins said records were broken across Australia.

"The exceptional story here is temperatures," Dr Watkins said.
