Ex-bus driver found guilty of negligent act

SINGAPORE: A former bus driver charged with a negligent act, which resulted in the death of the wife of a prominent professor, has been convicted and will be sentenced on February 28.
48-year-old Chan Mun Hing faces a maximum jail term of two years and a fine.
He is found guilty of a negligent act that does not amount to culpable homicide.
Chan had failed to give way to 42-year-old Ms Zhang Huairui, who was walking along the pedestrian crossing when the green man was showing.
The court heard that Chan was driving an SBS Transit double-decker bus at the junction of Clementi Avenue 3 and Commonwealth Avenue West on April 23, 2013, when the incident happened.
His lawyer, Mr Lim Hin Chye, told the court that Chan had stopped at the pedestrian crossing before moving on.
Mr Lim said Chan did not see anyone crossing the road.
Ms Zhang, a housewife, was pinned under the bus and dragged for about five metres before the vehicle came to a stop.
The prosecution urged the court to impose a two-week sentence, but the defence noted that non-custodial sentences have been passed previously.
Mr Lim has asked for a one-day jail term and a fine for his client. - CNA/ac
