I bet nobody remembers this gentleman. He graced our parliament from 1997 to 2002. Anybody recall what he contributed? A nominated member of parliament. Probably the worst idea ever suggested by PAP and considerable waste of state resources. Interestingly their own MPs such Lily Neo, Tan Cheng Bock, Tan Soo Khoon etc offered more critical and alternative views than all these NMPs ever did with a few exceptions.

Geez! Who's he? Hmm..during that period, I was around what. Dont know him leh. Since he must be somebody to be nominated MP, then it must be me going senile not remembering about him at all.

What an easy life! Just receive MP's allowances without doing anything.

Is it a surprised that in a One Party State that the system consist of many "chiak leow bee" type.
They (many MPs/NMPs) either parachute/lottery into Parliament and at the end of the service and exit into some directorship somewhere. Other than making up the numbers, I am not sure what they stand for politically.

So, a a quick google reveal that this guy does not know what to say and pick on scholars and their bonds. He also spoke on some petty topics not worth mentioning here.

If I read correctly, he was an ACS boy and had passed away from colon cancer a few years back leaving behind a wife & 2 sons.

Hope I am not wasting my time here.

Mr Ong Chin Guan, Noris:
To ask the Minister for Home Affairs if he will furnish information over the last three years (i) the number of illegal immigrants arrested, by their countries of origin, and (ii) the number of employers and agents arrested for employing illegal immigrants compared to the number of landlords arrested for harbouring illegal immigrants.

Answer :
Last year, the Home Team arrested about 16,500 immigration offenders, comprising both illegal immigrants and overstayers. This represents a 3% decrease compared to the 17,000 immigration offenders arrested in 1999, and a 28% decrease compared to the 23,000 immigration offenders arrested in 1998. While the situation has improved over the last 3 years, the figure last year is still 18% higher than the 14,000 arrested in 1997. The immigration offenders arrested came from all over the region, mainly Bangladesh, China and India. The immigration offender problem is still a serious one.

As for harbourers and employers, there has been an increase in the number of arrests over the last 3 years. Last year, 590 people were arrested for harbouring immigration offenders, compared to 306 in 1999 and 166 in 1998. 572 people were arrested for employing immigration offenders. This is an increase over the 388 employers arrested in 1999 and the 270 arrested in 1998.

He was active in the grassroots at Bedok

Yes, was the CCC Chairman of Bedok and also a PAP cadre member. So why the representation?

cannot let down committed cadre yet cannot break precedence: he not good enough for full MP, so reward him by using back channel to fulfill the man's desire to sit in the House mah... I surmise

NMP is GCT's strategy to broaden the center & practice of co-optation.

'If you uncomfortable with grassroots work,
dislike the stress & risk of electioneering work,
dun worry,NMP for you .... appointed at our say-so...'

Off the top of my head,
NMPs noteworthy to me:-

Walter Woon
Claire Chiang
Kuwa something Soin
last not least....
Siew Kum Hong

Other than SKH what have the others one for the citizens that they were supposed to represent after they ceased being NMPs? They are a waste of time are nothing more than part of the PAP's charade of being a democratic country.
