SINGAPORE: Singapore will be taking part in the Cheerleading Asia International Open Championships in Tokyo later this month.

It will be the second time Singapore is taking part in the competition, but the competitors going there will be from the newly-formed national cheerleading team.

Singapore finished second in the mixed stunts category last year. Team Lions hope to bring home the gold this time round.

The team has proven it is the best on the local stage at this year's National Cheerleading Championships.

Now, preparations are under way for these top cheerleaders to compete in the international arena.

They will be up against powerhouse Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines and Taiwan.

Team Lions members come from four schools and institutions of higher learning.

Elvina Wang, the vice-captain of the team, said: "Initially it was quite scary; we were still in our own cliques...we couldn't really bond across teams. But after a while, because we "stunt" together, we try to mix and match all of us together by bonding... so, we got really close and I kind of enjoy this team as well."

Team captain Sen Poh Kang, who competed in last year's competition, said: "When I joined the first time, I just wanted to go there and have an experience of the international competition. But this time round, I believe that the whole team, which is this team...(are going there) with an objective - which is to get first in the international category."

The team's head coach, Ong Wei Cheng, is confident the group will do well in the 19-20 May competition.

Team Lions will compete on both days of the competition, where their points will be added up to determine the final winner.

Mindless aping of American culture.

In fact I don't know what's is all about. So I checked:

Cheerleading is a physical activity, sometimes a competitivesport, based on organized routines, usually ranging from one to three minutes, which contain the components of tumbling, dance, jumps, cheers, and stunting to direct spectators of events to cheer on sports teams at games or to participate in competitions. The athlete involved is called a cheerleader. Cheerleading originated in the United States, and remains a predominantly American activity, with an estimated 1.5 million participants in all-star cheerleading. The growing presentation of cheerleading as a sport to a global audience has been led by the 1997 start of broadcasts of cheerleading competition by ESPN International and the worldwide release of the 2000 film Bring it On. Due in part to this recent exposure, there are now an estimated 100,000 participants scattered around the rest of the world in countries including Australia, Canada, China, Colombia, Finland, France, Germany, Japan,[SUP][1][/SUP] the Netherlands, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.[SUP][2][/SUP]

If porlumpar is a competition, the MIW grassloot leaders will win hands down. Some of the farkers from my area have literally turned porlumparing into a science.

Yes, in my constituency too. These idiots think that praising the scums in white is the intelligent thing to do.
