<!--start of story text-->Bangladeshi worker Hafizul Islam Kofil Uddin will get to keep $1 million in damages for a 2008 industrial accident that left him paralysed from the waist down.
This after his former employer and two other firms failed in their bid to have the sum almost halved.
The Court of Appeal said it was 'not persuaded' to reduce the sum in judgment grounds issued on Monday.
It was the employer's second appeal, after it failed at the High Court last year.

Under the SAF Group Insurance scheme, the NSmen have the option of selecting the sum assured in multiples of $10,000, from a minimum of $20,000 to a maximum of $600,000. For each insured sum of $10,000, the NSman has to pay a monthly premium of $1.28 and $1 for his dependants.

Those NSmen who participate in the scheme can expect to receive rebates for their annual premiums in a "good year" (i.e. a year in which claims paid out to policyholders are lesser than the total premiums received). The rebates paid out in the last 3 policy years averaged at about 34% of total premiums paid by policyholders. Based on the revised rate of $1.28 and $1 for servicemen and his dependants, this in effect meant that policyholders pay a monthly premium of only $0.85 and $0.66 per $10,000 coverage, for himself and his dependants. Premiums for the sum insured will be deducted monthly through GIRO.
