Then, after three months of calls, SMSes, one date and a Valentine's poem that made her 'feel love', they became an item.
Eight months later in November 2007, their relationship turned sexual.
The two of them engaged in sex on three other occasions before they were found out by her parents last January.
The police then became involved.
In court yesterday, the teen Xia Yun, now 19, pleaded guilty to two counts of carnal connection.
Xia, a Singapore permanent resident, is currently waiting to be enlisted for full-time national service.
Clad in a grey-and-white striped T-shirt and jeans, he told Judge Soh Tze Bian he has 'realised his mistake'.
He added that he has since married and that his wife recently gave birth. His parents have been helping to take care of the child.
'I was young then. I was ignorant...Now that I have a wife and a child, please give me a chance,' he said in Mandarin.
As Xia is still under 21, Judge Soh said he would call for a pre-sentence report to find if the teen was suitable for probation.
However, if Xia is not granted probation, he faces the usual penalty for having sex with a girl under 16: up to five years' jail and a fine of up to $10,000 for each charge.
The court heard yesterday that the girl had met Xia on the multi-player online gaming website AuditionSea some time in December 2006.
They exchanged cellphone numbers and kept in constant contact via text messages and calls.
Then on Valentine's Day in 2007, they met for the first time and he professed his love for her in a poem.
One month later, they got together and restricted themselves to holding hands and kissing.
But after one barbecue gathering in November that year, he took her home and they engaged in consensual sex.
They had sex at least three more times after that, at his home and at hers. She had already turned 11 on these occasions but he was 17.
Her mother became suspicious and started questioning her. The girl eventually admitted that she had been engaging in sex with Xia.
The girl's mother then told the father about the matter on Jan 7 last year. He lodged a police report immediately, saying that his daughter had been molested.
The girl, now 13 and a Secondary One student, is staying at a girls' home. Sentencing will be decided next month.
