The current European heatwave is the worst ever recorded on the continent, prompting red alerts across multiple nations, shattering all-time temperature records. Less than 20% of European homes have air conditioning, leaving millions trapped in brick and stone buildings designed historically to trap heat rather than vent it, while 100% of the Chinese homes possess over 100% of air conditioning

Global warming. 9 of the 10 hottest years on record have occurred in the past decade.

But the conspiracy theorists will say it's hoax, of course.

My mother who is living there complaining too. Lol

Since the European Union consists of countries with distinct seasons, the local market for air conditioning and heating systems is relatively small, making both the units and their installation quite expensive. Residents rarely see a need for them during typical weather, except during periods of exceptionally hot or cold temperatures.
The entire market for these items depends on imports from China, as they are more affordable than locally manufactured alternatives.

The heat and humidity in S'pore has also been unbearable these past 3-4 days. I had no alternative except to keep the A/C on when I WFH.

France’s public schools and hospitals have traditionally lacked air conditioning due to deep-rooted environmental policies, architectural challenges, and historical cultural resistance. However, in the face of the severe June 2026 European heatwave, authorities are being forced to pivot rapidly as the public health infrastructure comes under significant strain.
guesstimate figure for a Chinese make air conditioner price in France is Euro $2000 and Chinese is RMB $1000

Previously it's not a requirement. Unlike US, summer tends to be hot unlike Europe where you get a cool Breeze. But now, china will make a killing selling Europeans their air con previously summer tends to be low usage of electricity. That may change soon

US and China have continental climate: cold winters, hot summers. Western Europe on the western end of Eurasia has maritime climate: mild winters, cool summers. As you go eastwards towards central and eastern Europe the winter-summer differential grows. Hence traditionally most Western Europen homes do not have AC.
