Engine Stop-start

... I think people who buy this type of cars won't keep them long until problems show up.

Just bought a vehicle with this function. Do you guys enable this function or off it? Any issues with such frequent of off and restarting? How many years of using so far?

yeah the spark plug die earlier. no problem just replace them if they die. i leave them on to save petrol.
 
The engine shut down whenever the car stop and restart when driver step on the gas pedal. The idea fuel be save when car stop at traffic lights and jams. Not really sure if it really save fuel. It just another device that will rosak as the car age. Only expensive conti cars come with this function.

Now I know what is I-stop.
Not only ex conti cars....the new model Mazda 6 has it.
 
so what happens when car wheels got caught on a rail track and engine decide to cut off itself and train approaching fast?

does this adds up to road kill....
 
If wheels get caught in rail track, the last thing you would do is press brake (that is the first condition to satisfy before engine cuts off), therefore normally ppl would step on accelerator, reverse or drive and both cases wont cut off.

Yeah, the mazda 6 2.5 has this i-stop.. and the e-loop to regenerate and store electricity when brakes are pressed.. save quite abit of fuel under both measures..

This tech was placed in higher end models in the beginning. Now it has flowed into mid range models. I am sure there must be significant redesign to make it affordable for mid range and lower ranges in the future. Just wondering how reliable it is. I think this tech only in the market at most 5 years. If this function spoils, I think lumpar sure tua kee one.
 
This feature will save petrol if one has a lot of city drivings. when there is a mixture of city and motorway driving, the savings would be reduced. One thing for sure, the car must be maintained in top condition; i.e. when there is a demand to start the car, the car must start. In the initial year if the car is serviced by agents, this may not be a problem. The problem would come when one feels the agent is charging too much and decided to switch to road-side mechanics for quick and cheaper car servicing. Fortunately, car nowadays come with fuel injection system that make starting pretty reliable. My 25-year old Merc with fuel injection system can still be started with just one kick in the morning. One would have to work out if it is cost effective to save these few bucks as replacement cost of the batteries and motor starter may out weight the savings.
 
The first prius in 1997 already has this engine stop function, but it was only in Japan. Subsequent generations of prius from 2004 came standard with this function for international models. So this has been around for a decade+. As usual, government incentives/disincentive, red tape and a mixture of tax hamper the proliferation of such tech in vehicles and hence the slow adoption rate. Due to very stringent carbon emission standards in europe, the adoption rate of such techs and beyond is double digits there. Even U.S is slow to adopt such measures, the current Honda FIT sold to the US market has it removed, but everywhere else this function comes standard.
