Editor’s note: Rumours casting doubts on Mr Tan Jee Say’s character began to circulate on the Net right at about the time he was nominated to run for Presidential Election, resulting in mainstream media reporters hounding Mr Tan for answers to the Net rumours.
Mr Tan decided to contact Temasek Review Emeritus to rebut some of these rumours. We present Mr Tan’s rebuttal here.
Allegations 1-3:
1. “When Morgan Grenfell came knocking, TJS jumped at the chance. He promised them to bring in much monies from the Malaysian conglomerates which he came into contact with during his tenure at the Ministry of Trade & Industry. His results at Morgan Grenfell speak for themselves, TJS did not deliver the monies and his peers soon found that he was a light weight load of hot air.”
Rebuttal: Morgan Grenfell did not need TJS to bring in business from Malaysian conglomerates; it had an office in KL and great contacts with Malaysian govt and conglomerates. TJS helped Morgan Grenfell win major business deals in other countries such as the Singtel privatisation, the first-ever telecom privatisation deal that Morgan Grenfell ever won worldwide.
2. “His stay at Peregrine Bank was just as short lived. In fact, he had a contributory role in Bank Peregrine’s eventual demise. His poor judgement, resulted in his failure to dispense proper advice that the investment into an Indonesian concern was not viable. TJS, the person responsible, failed to do appropriate due diligence. Peregrine’s bankruptcy saw him packing his bags again.”
Rebuttal: TJS was not involved with Peregrine’s “investment” in the Indonesian concern that triggered Peregrine’s collapse. It was a fixed income deal, not an equity one and so was outside his purview. It was handled directly by the Fixed Income Desk together with the Jakarta office. He left Peregrine before, not after, its collapse.
3. “At AIB Govett, it was reported that his strength was in policy making. This firm collapsed whilst others survived. Obviously TJS’s policies were wrong.”
Rebuttal: AIB Govett was bought over by another fund management group in the UK during a time when there was consolidation in the industry which saw many fund management companies being acquired by other firms. The new owner decided to close down the Singapore office. This occurred a few years after TJS had left AIB Govett.

Anyone who is a threat to TT winning the PE will have lies circulating about him. If TKL is viewed as the frontrunner, you can be sure that someone will post on the net that he knelt down and begged when he left NTUC. And if TCB was in the lead, someone will circulate news that he had tp practice in Ama Keng because he was not good enough to practice in Mount E. But if TT is in the lead, you can be sure that there will be news circuating in the main media on how wise the people of Singapore are. And there will be endless streaming over TV on how great a man TT is( obviously these will be absolute lies).These are vicious acts and we must not help to promote them. With the WP article in the press it is but the truth that we are living in an oppressive state. It is time to unite every man on the street and put things right. We want honesty and we want a truly democratic country.

They are obviously targetting Tan Jee Say as they can't stand seeing an Opposition figure becoming their next President should he wins this Saturday...
