Latest news is that Samsung has rejected Huawei's request to help make chips for Huawei's phones. Previously Huawei's Kirin HiSilicon were made by TSMC, then TSMC no longer wants to do business with Huawei.

By the way, chips are not just for smartphones... all your telco equipment and even the launching of missiles require them. Good luck.
