PAP Member of Parliament for Moulmein-Kallang GRC Edwin Tong Chun Fai was appointed a senior counsel today, together with three others.

The Straits Times reported that this is an "elite" scheme which was "introduced in 1997 to recognise outstanding advocates who have extensive knowledge of the law and the highest professional standing".

Last year, no senior counsels were appointed.

This year, Mr Tong was selected.

The selection committee was made up of the Chief Justice, Attorney-General V K Rajah, Justice of Appeal Chao Hick Tin and Justice of Appeal Andrew Phang Boon Leong.

In 2013, Mr Tong had said that Singaporeans should not become dependent on the government for handouts.

"We have to be careful not to end up on the slippery slope of welfarism and becoming overly dependent on handouts," he had said.

"I am concerned that we create a dependency on such transfers which is not paired with co-funding or co-payments. In contrast to off-set packages, once we introduce a permanent transfer, especially over a sustained period, it will be difficult to withdraw or even re-calibrate. Come 2020, we may either have to find a way to top up this fund, or create another one," he also said.

In 2012, a man called William said that he was homeless and wanted to look for Mr Tong "regarding about HDB matters for a second time" but said that Mr Tong's "face immediately turn SOUR and seen very (reluctant) to help ordinary people like me to get a rental HDB flat who is at a stage of being homeless.”

What do you think of Mr Tong's actions and beliefs? Also, between his very busy schedule of now being a senior counsel and being an MP, do you think that he has time to do both his jobs well?

And now that he has been given an "elite" position, will it make him even busier and out-of-touch with Singaporeans?

Mr Tong is also representing City Harvest church founder and senior pastor Kong Hee for allegedly having misappropriated $24 million from the church.

Altogether, there are 59 senior counsels this year.

The other PAP MPs who are also senior counsels are Minister for Law Mr K. Shanmugam, Senior Minister of State for Law and Education Indranee Thurai Rajah, Bishan-Toa Poyah MP and Hri Kumar Nair from Drew & Napier.

Mr Davinder Singh, also from Drew & Napier, who is representing prime minister Lee Hsien Loong in the defamation suit against blogger Roy Ngerng is also a senior counsel. He was named the Disputes Lawyer of the Year for South-east Asia and India at the Asian Lawyer's Emerging Markets Awards in November last year.

In the meanwhile, the opposition is full of losers.

like this means can over charge and its ok?

If you read some of his comments as MP, you will laugh your head off and find it difficult that he is a lawyer, let alone a Senior Counsel.

Siah seh the genuine SCs.
