Throughout history, immigrant minority groups that have over generations, achieved significant economic success within their host countries are often resented. Chinese minorities in Malaysia, Indonesia and Philippines are prominent examples. During racial riots in Indonesia in 1998, over 1,000 ethnic Chinese were killed, their homes and businesses destroyed and communities terrorised. Historically, many Chinese immigrants achieved wealth through entrepreneurship and investment in education, eventually becoming a highly affluent group per capita. When a visible minority achieves disproportionate economic success, resentment is triggered in the majority population. The majority may view this success as an unfair accumulation of influence, leading to envy or even collective violence. The animosity against Chinese entrepreneurs and Indian professionals in parts of Asia and the West, has also been directed at Jews throughout history.
