East-West Line delay caused by switch mechanism problem: Janil Puthucheary

SINGAPORE - The nearly seven hour delay on the East-West Line (EWL) on Wednesday (Sept 19) was caused by a switch mechanism problem, said Senior Minister of State for Transport, Dr Janil Puthucheary.

Thousands of MRT commuters faced delays of up to 40 minutes during the rush hour on Wednesday morning, the second disruption on the line in two days.

"We could have taken a decision to stop services and allow us to just simply concentrate on repairing the problem but that would have been a very big impact on the commuter experience," he told reporters at the sidelines of the launch of the SG Mobility Gallery on Wednesday.

"So the decision we took now allows trains to pass, but it's slowing down the commute. So it's slowing, rather than stopping," added Dr Janil.

"We thought on balance, that was better for the commuters but it does mean that it's going to take a little bit of time to ascertain exactly what the problem is with the switch mechanism."

Dr Janil was speaking to reporters before SMRT tweeted about the resumption of normal services at 1.35pm.

In a Facebook post at 8.45am, SMRT said that train services had to be stopped between Clementi and Jurong East MRT stations to allow its technicians to go onto the track to check on the fault, which occurred at about 7am.

"Trains are progressively returning to normal speed. Do continue to add 15 mins train travel time between Boon Lay and Queenstown."

At 1.50pm, SMRT tweeted that train services were back to normal.

Why SMRT CEO no mouth ah? Why must a Minister talk on SMRT behalf. Weird organisational culture... You pay millions to a CEO for him to keep quiet on major events???

Obviously SMRT still hasn't learned anything about preventive maintenance. Maybe they have retrenched all the experienced staff & all the newbiestaff can only react after something breaks down?

This is the story of corporate Singapore because the govt of LHL allows it to happen-meaning a toothless labour movement and curbs on protest, strikes , ect2
Normally you see the most expensive staff being retrenched to cut cost and the most expensive usually equates to the most experienced/reliable -if not they will sacked long ago.
However when the company fail to perform, instead of removing the policy makers (meaning top management) , they usually retrench the middle management who have no protection at all. Consumers are than made to suffer for the drop in service standard whilst pricing remains the same.
Why don't consumer boycott such companies -this is because the retrenchment is normally carried out by GLC's or cartel type of industries that close ranks and do it together eg banks, telcos, airlines ect2.
Example all banks retrench people-so are you going to boycott all banks. Can you boycott MRT-what's the alternative. The best example is Singtel which year after year keep delaying until last second the broadcast of European football despite selling the package often on 2 years contract .This is why they are getting away with it
Only a strong labour movement and democratic institutions can protect society from such nonsense.

I got a wonderful solution to the problems with Singapore train.
The old CEO should not be fired or transferred or parachuted elsewhere.
He should be made the Emeratus CEO of SMRT.
Get another 4 more paper generals. They with the current paper general, be made into a Board of CEOs of 5 CEOs.
Pay will be the same for all 5 to underline that those 5 are all equals and elites.

Guarantee the trains will never be late and never langar and all will be well again

If GLCs are so politicised then how can the PAP claim to be world class?

It's no wonder that GLCs have been failing to succeed outside of Singapore. They are not being run by entrepreneurs but overpaid scholars.
