A 3.3-magnitude earthquake shook homes in north-west England late on Wednesday night waking up thousands of Brits.

The tremor struck shortly after 11.23 pm and was felt across Lancashire and the southern Lake District, including the towns of Kendal and Ulverston, within 12 miles of the epicentre.

Data suggests the quake occurred just off the coast of Silverdale, Lancashire at a depth of 1.86 miles.

Residents told the British Geological Survey (BGS) it 'felt like an underground explosion' and was 'so powerful it shook the whole house'.

The Volcano Discovery website, which also collects information on earthquakes, received more than 1,100 reports from people who were in the area at the time.

Most reports detailed 'light' or 'weak' shaking.

Taking to social media, residents shared their reaction to the late night tremor.

On X, formerly Twitter, Dr Cherry Canovan wrote: 'Er... was there just an earthquake in NW England?'

One person replied that they had felt the earthquake in south Cumbria while Megan Adams said the quake had hit as far south as Blackpool.

Speaking to BBC News, one resident in Lancashire claimed they thought someone had 'driven into the house' when the earthquake hit.

atrina Simmons said: 'The shaking woke me up, I thought someone had driven into the house.

'It was about 25 to 12 and I jumped straight out of bed. I live on my own so it gave me a hell of a scare. It was only when I went on Facebook this morning I realised it was an earthquake.'

In a statement Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said: 'We're aware that many residents felt or heard a loud bang earlier this evening in the Carnforth area.

'Our crews, along with colleagues from police and NWAS, have been supporting the response after a minor earthquake was recorded near the Lancashire–Cumbria border.'

Lancashire Police said they received reports of a 'loud explosion' in the area.

The force said there had been a 'minor earthquake in the area, near to the Lancashire and Cumbria border, measuring 3.3 magnitude'.

It added: 'There have been no reports of anyone injured or damage caused but we have officers in the area, together with colleagues from the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service and the North West Ambulance Service.'

Each year, the BGS detects between 200 and 300 earthquakes in the UK, but only around 20 to 30 are strong enough to be felt.

Most go unnoticed, recorded only by sensitive instruments, and the vast majority cause little or no damage.

The most recent earthquake measuring more than 3.3 magnitude was felt in parts of Perth and Kinross on October 20.

The BGS said the quake struck at 7.25am, with its epicentre in Pubil, in the Glen Lyon region.

This is a breaking news story. More to follow.
