Australia says Japan E.coli outbreak from processing
Posted: 03 June 2011 1130 hrs

• E. coli found among 15 Japanese diners

SYDNEY: Australian livestock officials Friday said an E. coli outbreak in Japan may have involved Australian meat, but that it was most likely contaminated during processing in Japan.

Some 15 diners were infected with the O157 strain of E. coli bacteria after eating at a Korean-style barbecue restaurant a Japanese outlet on May 6.

All have since recovered.

Meat and Livestock Australia regional manager in Japan Melanie Brock said the outbreak was being investigated but there had been no official confirmation of the source of the beef involved.

"At this stage what we need to determine is at exactly what point the contamination has taken place," she told ABC Radio.

"We believe it has taken place during processing in Japan of Australian beef, but it's still very early here. We're working through the details."

The strain involved in Japan is not the same as the one involved in the current deadly outbreak in Europe.

Killer bacteria cases reported in 12 countries: WHO

COPENHAGEN - Twelve countries have so far reported cases linked to a still unexplained outbreak of a lethal bacteria that has claimed 18 lives, mainly in Germany, the World Health Organisation said Friday.

"Countries continue to report cases of haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) and enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC)," the WHO's Europe division said in a statement, adding it had received reports of cases in 12 countries.

Enterohaemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) can cause bloody diarrhoea and potentially fatal liver damage, as well as full-blown haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS), a serious kidney ailment.

As of 2 June, 502 people in total had contracted HUS while 1,064 had contracted EHEC, according to the WHO count.

An AFP toll compiled from national health authorities meanwhile showed more than 2,000 people in total had fallen ill.

In addition to Germany, the epicentre of the outbreak where 17 people have died, cases of HUS and/or EHEC, had by Thursday been reported in Austria (HUS 0, EHEC 2), Britain (3,4), the Czech Republic (0,1), Denmark (7,10), France (0,6), the Netherlands (4,4), Norway (0,1), Spain (1,0), Sweden (15,28), Switzerland (0,2), and the United States (2,0), the WHO said.

"All these cases except two are in people who reside in or had recently visited northern Germany during the incubation period for the infection (typically three to four days post-exposure), or in one case, had contact with a visitor from northern Germany," it explained.

The health organisation said Thursday the strain of a lethal bacteria was "very rare" and had never been seen in an outbreak form before.

Avoid raw food for now: doctors

SINGAPORE: Doctors are advising Singaporeans to avoid raw food for now, following the E. coli outbreak in Europe that has killed 18 people.

The bacteria is commonly transmitted via contaminated raw food and sometimes through contaminated water. It can also be transmitted from person to person.

Singaporeans travelling to Germany should avoid eating raw tomatoes and leafy vegetables like lettuce and cucumbers, says Dr Douglas Chan, Associate Consultant at the National University Hospital's Division of Microbiology.

Symptoms of E. coli infection include abdominal pain and bloody diarrhoea.

When it comes to food preparation, doctors say raw and cooked food should be separated to reduce contamination.

They advise eating cooked food as it means the bacteria is killed before consumption.

Associate Professor Leo Yee Sin, head of Department of Infectious Diseases at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, said: "It is a personal choice whether this person will take up a salad or raw food, but I would strongly suggest that at this moment in time when the situation is less clear, it's good to avoid raw food or food that you really do not know the source, whether or not it could potentially be contaminated, unclean or poorly prepared."
