SINGAPORE - A 49-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run accident along Jalan Bukit Merah last week that resulted in the death of a 78-year-old man.

Last Thursday (Aug 17) at about 6.35am, Mr Song Chee Keong was hit by a power-assisted bicycle - otherwise known as an electric bicycle or e-bike - outside a McDonald's outlet along Jalan Bukit Merah, sustaining serious head injuries. The e-bike rider left before the police arrived at the scene.

Mr Song later died of his injuries in hospital last Saturday.

The Singapore Police Force had earlier appealed to the public to come forward if they had information, and on Monday released photos of the man suspected of being involved in the accident.

The police said the man was arrested for causing death by a rash act and that investigations into the case are still ongoing.

The maximum punishment for causing death by a rash act is five years' jail and a fine.

In June, The Straits Times reported that there were 54 accidents involving e-bikes last year (2016), up from 39 the previous year, though the number of fatal accidents decreased from five in 2015 to three last year.

Pedestrians should learn to stay well clear of e-bikes as they have the right of way on public roads.

Pedestrians should stay on the pavements and use overhead and pedestrian crossings. Any pedestrian that jaywalks deserves to be run over.

This is on the pavement, obviously you have not been to Queensway shopping centre, the road is always congested with cars at that junction, most will be using the pavement outside MacD to go the pedestrian crossing to get to the traffic lights junction to cross either to Alexandra Village, to IKEA, to Alexandra Point...this is a case of an inconsiderate ebike user....the ones we encounter each day...that speed on the pavement , full of people. So, we have a speeding ebike & a slow moving elderly...

It is the fault of the the eldery to walk on the pavement?..

Nowadays it is very stressful to walk...using walkways, in food courts, coffee shops, shopping malls & almost anywhere..."people are so healthy" these days. You have to keep a look out for people on wobbly bikes, like they are riding without any seats, children in bikes with training wheels or without, older ones with speed bikes or bikes with lights & loud speakers, children zipping around in those leg driven scooters, older ones in electric leg scooters, then the e-bikes, that speed past you...oldies in the electric three wheelers or four, plus electric wheel chairs...

You can get hit by any of these...plus old ladies with their marketing carts, plus ladies in baby strollers....the paths & pavements are certainly very crowded & dangerous....

One have to wear helmet, safety boots, knee & elbow guards, plus groin guard...in case those small kiddie in the leg scooter run into you & hit your "family jewels"...ouch!

You can die...walking on pavements in Singapore..

I looked at the form & OIC!...it was to apply for the licence for an ebike...he had the form filled up , on his behalf....I told him...LTA require you to have an email account, in order that he can apply....he shook his head!. I told him, go home, ask anybody of any of your children for their email account & just fill that up, or ask someone get you one....he, went off.

Now, that clown of a PM...wants people, to use an APP to park their vehicles...while many of the PIONEER generation, is still in the 'stone age'....many like this man....have no email account & some, don't even use the Internet..nvm! apps on the smartphone....many still using the text & call 3G phones...

This will happen eventually. Old foggies on e-bikes demanding their right of way on pavement.

If motorcyclist needs to go through hours of training just to properly handle a motorbike, I don't see how it could not apply to e-bikesrs.

This is what you get when Spore is divided into road users and the rest of the users.

Our walkways have become congested with pedestrians, wheel chairs, trolleys, ebikes, bicycles, ...etc. There are no rules to use these walk ways so people are getting hurt.

The problem will get worse because the PAP want to let in more people into Spore.

You said it, bicycle come with bells, many do not use, but the youngsters have loud annoying speaker attached to the bike, you can hear them, but they go so fast...you are slow like 78 years old you get hit. You get the very young ones with their bicycles or with the leg scooters....they either run over your legs or hit your, "crown jewels". Then the oldies with their slow moving three wheelers or four....you don't pay attention...they slow but surely plow into you...

The sidewalks, pavements , even the park paths are crowded...crowded with all sorts of moving vehicles....that can cause harm, if you are not careful....as a result, one has to do jogging at 2am in the morning...even then...you get those clowns in their e-bikes...

Damn...the whole country is a dangerous place...these are 'domestic terrorists' from 1 - 99 years of age...
