A company dinner meant for makan and bonding turned into a nightmare. A 37-year-old Malaysian subcontractor got drunk, then raped a 39-year-old Singaporean woman who was too intoxicated to even walk properly after the gathering.
After everyone left, the woman was sleeping on the office floor while another colleague rested upstairs. Around 3am, the man came down, knowing she was vulnerable, and sexually assaulted her before quietly leaving. She only woke up later and texted her friend saying someone had "f*cked" her.
Office CCTV later confirmed what happened. The victim made a police report, and the man was arrested the next day. In court, he pleaded guilty to rape and molestation.
He has now been sentenced to 11½ years' jail and 9 strokes of the cane. The court also heard the victim suffered emotional trauma, while her work and daily life were badly affected.
A night of drinking changed one person's life forever. Should there be more awareness about protecting vulnerable colleagues after company events?
