Walk into any pub/nightclub in a developed nation and you will likely see quite a balanced ratio of males and females socialising. From this, we can rationalize that both men and women consume alcohol, its a non-gender specific activity. But then, why is it (according to this report here) that men are the ones disproportionately busted for drink-driving? Are the cops biased in making arrests or what?

Nearly 90 per cent of motorists charged with drunk driving in Mississauga and Brampton last year were men, according to Peel Regional Police data.
Peel police’s Road Safety Services Unit says 1,094 people have been charged with impaired-related driving offences this year. Last year, the force charged 1,477 people, 86 per cent of which were male.
Gender data for 2015 will be compiled at the end of the year.
Data from the most recent Holiday RIDE program in Peel shows the average age of drinking drivers is 36.
Police have no clue why there is such a disproportionate number of men being charged, but said it’s of little consequence to officers on the road.
“There is no way to know exactly why men are located and charged more often, however impaired driving by either men or women is not acceptable and people who continue to threaten community safety by engaging in this dangerous act can be certain that when they are found, they will be charged,” said Acting Supt. Paul Pogue of the force’s Field Support Services unit.
Transportation Canada data from 2004 shows, of the more than 21 million licence drivers in Canada, more than 11 million were male.
Change the Conversation, a national education program on impaired driving in Canada, in its report on drinking and driving facts, says males accounted for 79 per cent of all fatally injured drivers who were over the legal limit of alcohol in 2010 and accounted for 71 per cent of all drivers killed in the same year “because males drive more than females and because males are more prone to taking risks when driving.”
The 1,477 drivers charged with impaired offences in Peel last year is in line with neighbouring regions of similar population such as York , whose officers charged 1,354 people last year, but way up from neighbouring Halton Region, whose officers charged 414 people last year. Halton’s population — just more than 500,000 according to 2011 data — is far less than Peel’s.
Peel Const. Joel Genoe of Road Safety Services said initiatives targeting impaired driving, such as the much-publicized RIDE enforcement during the Christmas season and other special occasions during the year, go a long way in preventing drivers from getting behind the wheel after drinking:
“But it’s difficult to measure the number of people deterred from drinking and driving as a result of RIDE programs,” he said. RIDE has been responsible for removing numerous impaired drivers from the road, each impaired driver arrest is potentially a life or multiple lives saved.”
