A 34-year-old drug addict used a knife to try to break into a naval garrison to loot weapons while hallucinating after taking methamphetamine, mainland media reports.

The unnamed man, from Nanchang, in Jiangxi province, threatened guards at the gate of garrison after taking the drug, the news website jxnews.com.cn said.

He has now been ordered to carry out two years of treatment for his drug addiction at a local rehabilitation centre.

A guard at the entrance to the garrison called out a warning as the man advanced within 10 metres of the garrison’s gate.

However, the man continued walking up to the gate, holding the knife in his right hand, while yelling that he had come to steal firearms, ammunition and a hand grenade.

The guard helped to calm him by pretending to be the garrison’s commander and promising to give him many weapons.

Then the man was quickly subdued by a group of five guards.

He then tried to committed suicide by biting and swallowing his tongue, the report said.

Police said the addict had later tested positive for methamphetamine.

The report did not mention other details about the garrison, including its location.

Police ordered the addict to undergo compulsory treatment at the rehabilitation centre, rather than placing him detention.

The guards were awarded second-class and third-class merit commendations for their response to the incident.
