Drivers tend to delay leaving a parking lot when someone is waiting for it

It is a common and frustrating experience to wait for another motorist to leave a parking space. This is because the other driver seems to take longer to do so, when he knows that we are waiting for that lot. Such behaviour arises from a sense of ownership over a public parking spot; seeing another car waiting may trigger an instinct to assert control and delay leaving. This is a form of passive-aggressive behaviour or power play. Do you agree?

I usually try to leave as soon as possible when I notice another driver waiting for my parking space. At times, I may have legitimate reasons to delay leaving such as answering a phone call, adjusting the car's aircon temperature, setting my GPS for my next route, or be simply unaware that someone is waiting for my lot.

There are studies showing that drivers leaving a public parking space are territorial even when it goes against their goal of leaving. In a study observing 200 departing cars, drivers took longer to leave when someone else was waiting for their lot vs those who had nobody waiting. In another study involving 240 motorists, drivers took longer to leave when another car honked at them. Male drivers left sooner when a more expensive car was waiting vs when a cheaper car was present. In a 3rd study, respondents to a survey said they would leave faster if the other car was just waiting for them to leave, but would take longer if the other motorist honked at them.

I have done that before, but encountered a problem when another car was waiting next to my lot with its signal on. Both drivers ended up arguing who had the right to my space.

I was backing into an empty lot a few years ago, when another car inched closer and the front passenger (a CECA woman) got out and asked me to give way to her husband, as he was in a hurry to get to his destination. I politely told her that my family had waited more than 10 mins for that open air space, which was next door to a popular hawker centre. I suspect that the CECA woman was trying to hoodwink me.

I.e purposely don't leave the space.
The leeson he gave me before I was about the punch him was, he accused that my car was blocking him from cumming out, which was absolutely untrue.
It was a uncle in his 60s.

Something similar happens when you are inside a crowded public toilet and waiting for someone to get out of a cubicle or finish peeing at the urinal.

In my offshore country, I purposely delay unless I am in hurry. Take time to load my purchases, return cart, adjust AC, mirrors, connect BT to phone and take sweet time to select my music - jazz or rock? hmmm. They can always fuck off to a further lot, not as if no space like Sinkieland

I once waited for a pompous middle-aged woman who took an eternity to drive away after entering her car. She made a phone call, talked for quite awhile, then proceeded to apply lipstick and touch up her make-up, even though I had my signal on to indicate that I wanted to enter her lot. The carpark was full, so I didn't really have a choice to look for an alternative space.

Drivers like you delay on purpose when they know that their lots are much sought after i.e. at hospitals, hotels when there is a wedding dinner, wet markets in the morning, hawker centres at meal times or popular malls like ION, Ngee Ann City, Plaza Singapura, Suntec City, Vivocity etc. It is usually arrogant or insecure drivers who engage in this sort of power play.

This is passive aggressive-behaviour when those who occupy a toilet cubicle or urinal see it as their right to give it up only when they feel like it.
