Rescue efforts are now underway to locate a man trapped inside the driver's seat of an overturned excavator in Novena Ville.

According to a Twitter post by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), the incident occurred in a construction site along Thompson Road.

"Upon SCDF arrival, there is an excavator that has toppled to its left and is half buried.

"There is a man trapped in the drivers compartment of the excavator. SCDF DART are at work with hydraulic rescue equipment an an on-site excavator.

The driver of an excavator that toppled on Thursday morning is believed to be dead. Officers from the Singapore Civil Defence Force are also likely to take a few hours to get to the man, who is stuck in the driver's cabin, as ground at the construction site is unstable.

latest report states that the man is dead... RIP...

This is an inevitable result of building plenty of crap on the island.

More condos, more malls, more MRT stations, more 40-storey HDB flats.

Nothing to do with building crap. The construction industry has its fair share of fatalities all over the world even in first world countries where safety standards are high. It's often a result of individual operators not following safety guidelines or being over confident in their abilities after many years of experience without incident.

Any more wise comments, boss?

That articles does nothing but prove my point. Singapore is up there with the best and wants to improve further despite the fact that it has a largely foreign construction workforce. It's a commendable stance taken by the government. I would like to congratulate PM Lee for taking a proactive stance towards safety.

In many countries, the leaders couldn't care less about foreign workers.

Fatality rate that is three times higher than that in Germany, and you say is up there with the best? Boss, you forget to take meds today?

In most of the Australian, Canadian and UK companies that I've visited, the company's attitude towards a safe working environment is very evident. Employees in those organisations are often very genuine in their attitude towards workplace safety.

In many of the local construction, shipyards, engineering firms in Singapore, you can see that they are very enthusiastic to get this safety certificate, that awareness certificate. They will do their safety audits swee swee, more swee than Miss Universe but when you interact with the employees, 90% of them gives you a shit attitude towards safety.

Nice said.

Excavator caved in and killed driver

[h=1]Man dies after excavator overturns at Novena Ville[/h]

<!-- google_ad_section_start -->The male driver of an excavator that toppled at a construction site in Novena Ville Thursday morning has died.

He has been identified by his cousin as 60-year-old Loh Chin Nam, a Singaporean who has been driving excavators for 40 years.

The deceased was married with children, according to the cousin, Loh Chin Seng.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted to the incident along Thomson Road at around 9:20 am Thursday.

A spokesperson said that, upon arrival, SCDF personnel saw that an excavator was “half-buried” and “toppled to the left with the driver inside the cabin”.

SCDF is now working with onsite contractors to extricate the driver's body, which remains "pinned" under a concrete slab.

A crane is being used to stabilise the toppled excavator, after which another excavator will be brought in to retrieve the body.

The construction is for the development of Novena Regency, a freehold commercial and residential building.

Describing the deceased as someone who "takes care of his children very well", his cousin Chin Seng then said: "People in construction need to be alert."

Re: Excavator caved in and killed driver

Poor chap, working for 40 years but now dead. Another who cannot live longer to enjoy his CPF money. Fuck bastard PAP.

You've pretty much summed up the root cause of the problem. It isn't the PAP. It isn't the employers. As you have aptly pointed out, it's the employees who don't give a shit. I say shame on them for risking their own lives and the lives of others.

It proves once again that it is ordinary peasant Singaporeans who are to be blamed for the shortcomings of the country. At the same time, they refuse to accept for their poor attitude towards matters of importance. They'll take credit when things go well and blame the government when things go wrong.

Singaporeans should be ashamed. You fool nobody but yourselves. In this case, it turns out the victims is one of your fellow citizens. His blood is on the hands of his fellow countrymen.

As for the PAP they are doing their best under trying circumstances while dealing with a citizenry who only give lip service to matters as important as safety.

No wonder LKY feels that daft Singaporeans need spurs stuck in their hides.

I think it was in 1995 in Shell Company a directive came that all cars use for work be it company or private owned must be fitted with rear passenger seat-belts, those days many older cars still have no rear passenger seat-belts like my Proton Saga Aeroback (1st Gen). Company paid for the fitting no question asked.

I was still a virgin in 1995. Now I can imagine how old you are :D

I may me old but you're bloody ahneh, people support your post kenna tekan, chey.
