SINGAPORE: The court has handed a driver a seven-month jail sentence and banned him from driving for seven years.

This comes after Yeo Teck Chye, now 48, was convicted of causing the death of a 58-year-old fruit seller assistant, Lim Kim Toon, by dangerous driving.

The traffic accident happened in mid-November 2008 along Telok Blangah Viaduct.

Yeo, who was driving a truck, was speeding.

He could not stop in time and collided into a lorry that had broken down.

The victim was a passenger in the lorry.

The accused, who is a father-of-four, claimed trial earlier this year but was found guilty on Friday.

In sentencing, the district judge said it was "regrettable" that the case would cause hardship on Yeo's family.

The judge however noted that a life was lost.

Yeo's lawyer, N K Rajarh, said he will be filing an appeal.
