does anyone go to a lawyer or doctor and not ask what the charges are like beforehand?

I think this is the crux of the issue-they did not complain about the bills for 7 years. If they are unhappy they should have paid on a per visit basis and stop seeing her once any bill was deemed excessive.
Any of us will stop visiting a doctor once we are charged exorbitantly-let alone drag on for years.

Dr Lim treated Pengiran Anak Hajah Damitx from 2001 until she died in August 2007.The Bruneians paid all her bills, which she had submitted till March 27, 2007 .But after the patient died, Dr Lim was queried on the rest.

Exactly. If one substitutes the remarks about Dr Lim, and replace with PAP cabinet in the ST reports, then the picture becomes very clear. Charging what the market will bear, with or without their concurrence, is that not what the PAP is doing? What moral standards are the fcuk are they talking about?

If the 'victim' was not the royal Brunei family but some unconnected run of the mill rich man probably pappies would sweep under the carpet.
End of the day the verdict and 'justice served' changes nothing and have no impact on us peasants.

What Susan did was wrong, regardless of whether the patient or her family made complaint after the patient died. You can't say that a victim who did not make a formal complaint immediately will automatically mean that the culprit is innocent.

It can be assumed that the patient or her family may not dare to raise a concern for fear that Susan will downgrade the level of treatment. Due to the perceived power over life and death, doctors ought to be held to higher standards than many other profession.

Dun fool yourself that this case will have any impact in future should any family members of yours get overcharged by doctors.
This is just a PR exercise public execution of the doctor who fucked with the wrong patient.
Why should peasants bother about this case? They dun have the Moolah to engage a doctor like Susan lim anyway.
