Dr Tony Tan has deleted the posting with the following explanation of his son抯 搒pecial?NS experience.

This is following detailed analysis in Temasek Review Emeritus (TRE) pointing out inconsistencies between what was written in the explanation and Dr Patrick Tan抯 CV.

Some of the key inconsistencies:
1) Dr Patrick Tan抯 first disruption was to go to Havard where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts. He was therefore not following the standard track of getting a disruption to go to medical school to come back and serve as a doctor.
2) The second disruption was to go to Stanford to get a MBBS. This second disruption is unprecedented and there is no record of anyone EVER getting a disruption to get a BA and then a second disruption to get a MBBS.
3) The disease he was doing research on is melioidosis . This is a somewhat obscure disease. The following is the Wikipedia link.

According to Wikipedia, it has a low mortality rate of 10% if treated with the correct antibiotics. As of today, there has never been a mass outbreak of melioidosis in Singapore. Also because of the relatively easy conventional treatment and low mortality rate, there is no record of anyone ever trying to weaponise this disease into a bio-weapon.
4) The time that Dr Patrick Tan took to obtain his MBBS is abnormally long (8 years). Most people get a MBBS from Stanford in 6 years. There is speculation that Dr Patrick Tan probably took a 1 to 2 gap years off. If this is true, this would be an anomaly since SAF is not known to approve disruption for gap years.

The Prince, who was hastily withdrawn from a tour of Helmand in 2008 after his position was compromised by foreign media reports, has often expressed the desire to return to the front line.

Now he is set to be granted another tour when his squadron is deployed to Afghanistan next year, by which time he should have completed his Apache pilot training.

Clarence House said the Prince would complete his training next year and would then be available for deployment wherever Apaches were needed ?including Afghanistan.

It is understood that his squadron is being lined up for a return to Afghanistan next year, most likely in late summer.

Rather than serving as a front line junior officer with the Household Cavalry, as he did on his previous tour, Prince Harry will fly a ?0 million AH-64 attack helicopter in operations against insurgents.

Replies also full of holes. Who says BA students not allowed to be disrupted? Who says second disruption not allowed?

Disruption was a common practice for all NSmen at that time - whether white horse, black horse, or ordinary horse or ordinary pigs. There were others who were allowed to be disrupted - if you had mixed around at campus you will know more. There was also the Wranglers scheme in which some talented people were fast tracked. Anything wrong with that?

As for the Indian NSman who claimed that his father was a road sweeper, an A level or even degree holder (quite rare at that time in Singapore) doesn't automatically go to OCS to be a combat officer if he is not fit - physically, mentally and morally. We know of these people who were storemen and drivers - some simply didn't care and "twang" all their way through NS.

NS is obviously unpopular & instead of abolishing or amending it, the PAP have simply set up a system of "white horses" & "lesser mortals".
