Dear TRE readers,

Thanks to the efforts of readers over at Han Hui Hui facebook who did a CSI
on what the old guard Dr Toh Chin Chye had said about the CPF.

Hats off to them. And I am doing my part to help spread the message.

Thanks to the Internet, we now can find what our founding fathers said from
the archives. In case you don’t know, Dr Toh Chin Chye was the Minister for
Health from 1975 to 1981 until he stepped down from the Cabinet in 1981 to make
way for younger ministers. He remained as a backbencher MP till 1988 when he
retired from politics completely while his compatriot LKY continued to remain in
politics up till even today.

As you can see, Dr Toh was vehemently against deferring the withdrawal of CPF
to beyond 60 years old. He said that it was a breach of the fundamental
principle on which CPF had been set up. At the time, even other PAP MPs
applauded Dr Toh at the end of his impassioned speech.

Dr Toh accused the Govt of setting a precedent with the Medisave scheme,
which affects people’s CPF savings.

He said the civil servants who came up with the Medisave scheme were people
who got pensions themselves. “It was easy for them to handle other people’s
problems. Pensions do not come from savings,” he said of the civil servants.

He said what was irksome was that “the government was using people’s savings
and telling them how to spend it”.

Unfortunately, we don’t have Dr Toh with us today to help defend us.

It is very important the we spread what the PAP old guard had said about the
CPF to as wide an audience as possible, especially the uncles and aunties.

Hopefully, the organizer will observe a minute of silence in remembrance of
this honest and upright statesman Dr Toh Chin Chye as well as Ong Teng

It show the difference between the Old Guard and the current batch of Clowns within the PAP. So it just proves one thing,,singapore'e developement was the work of the old guards and not LKY himself. Exactly! A promise had been broken. How can we trust them anymore? The goal-posts keep moving with all the attendant excuses and pretext, as if it is lawful. How can a broken promise be lawful, no matter how one look at it, it's our money and it is unlawful to withhold it when the maturity at 55 is due.

How about those who are not employed as salaried persons? Like those in business, self-employed and freelancers? How do the govt handle those people when they grow old except for medisave requirements? This shows clearly the whole notion that the withdrawal age is increased and thereafter withholding the money by way of annuity payouts is absurd because hawkers, businessmen, insurance agents, property agents, freelancers and housewives doing project works on the side are not affected.

Why have a policy that is not holistic but clearly opportunistic, because CPF only affects those who draw a salary. What a load of deceit in the guise of taking care of the people, when it is merely having access to cheap funds from a captive population who work as salaried people.

The possibility of mismanagement casts another shadow over the scheme's reason to exist. Is the govt truly concerned about the citizens' retirement, their job competitiveness and stewardship of the pension fund?

This reflects poorly on the current administration. This is the same administration that brought you the Population White Paper. Or perhaps the govt's inability to meet CPF obligations was the real backstory for the White Paper?
