Dr Koh applies deferrment on Friday for Monday's in-camp reservist. Impressed?

This isn't his full-time job, a politician. So, there is NO basis for him to qualify for a deferment. MINDEF will have to give a full explanation why Koh is entitled to deferment whereas thousand others more deserving cases do not get one!

I wonder what will happen if deferment is not approved, and he's charged for AWOL?

sounds like this will have to be a long wait bro... :(

we are still waiting for the answers to the questions for AIM

Would have been great if he was not granted deferrment but allowed to conduct his campaign from his ict.
The rallies can be held at the site where they go for field training.
Supporters all dressed in camouflage uniform.
Those who are pap supporters cheering, those who are opposition supporters booing.

Then they can have an simulated attack on the "enemies" ( oppositions) with smoke grenade & blanks...who will be the controller??

he the CO of the unit. technically, he can excuse himself from the training.

anyway, pap screw up badly regarding the candidate. why choose one that have impending ICT? and stupid enough to announce to the whole world regarding the ICT.

Mindef should cancel the god damn ICT. PAP election more important.

he will surely get his deferment lah. not as if he is a key appointment holder or the only doctor in his unit. the other "less fortunate" sinkies in his ICT batch will have to carry on with the training.

Will Desmond and KJ apply for deferment? Li Lian no need. Haha!

It appears that Dr Koh is quite confident in getting the reservist deferment from MINDEF. If it was an opposition candidate, it would be interesting to find out if MINDEF would grant any deferment for the opposition candidate to campaign in an election.

Even so, how many people like you and me can apply for a deferment, say, on a Friday, for a callup on Monday and get deferred?

The usual practice for someone who misses a week of a two-week in-camp training is to do make-up training on a different ICT and not rejoin the ICT halfway. He must be joking. Anyway the SAF normally won't grant last minute deferment. With a few months' notice, why didn't he seek deferment earlier? Must SAF now make an exception for him?

He did not forsee a by-election.
Probably, he was unaware that he will be a candidate for this hastily called by-election.
In any event, he should have asked for deferment, as soon as he became aware or at the latest, on the day before nomination day.

With respect, I believe that MINDEF can probably find another Major (reservist or regular) to cover his CO appointment, but in terms of unit comradeship, esprit de corps, and bonding, it is preferable to have the same officer as your CO, during ICT, mobilization and on deployment.

I can see that they do not want the identity of the candidate to be leaked. He can of course apply to the highest command without going through the lower echelon and secrecy can still be intact. Or he can apply on the nomination day itself giving some time for covering of duties. Having the same commander and esprit de corps is ideal but even in time of war, you have to live with the inevitable - the death of a commander, relief in line etc. During peacetime, we have a very good example of the Parade Commander for the National Day Parade having to be changed fairly late in the preparation stage for a personal reason. A National Day Parade is not a lesser event than an ICT and anyway, the deferment of ICT is only a temporary detachment from his men.

I agree.
I assume that MINDEF will grant him his request for deferment.
