My family has been sick the past 4 weeks. One by one get sick. All except one of my sons. We kept wondering why he is not sick? Plus he never got the flu shot!

Then this morning I was in his room and saw his box of Apprilon. That's doxycycline which he is taking for acne.

It dawned on me. Hmm doxycycline. But that's an antibiotic and we keep saying antibiotics dont work on viruses right?

But maybe not so for doxycyline. It works by inhibiting RNA and protein synthesis.

It has been shown to work against dengue virus in vitro.

Also vesicular stomatitis virus in vitro

Chikugunya virus

Improves clinical outcomes in Cystic Fibrosis patients

https://erj.ersjournals.com/content/49/4/1601102

Reduces damage to lungs during acute lung injury

https://link.springer.com/article/10.1186/1477-5956-8-3

And attenuated lung damage in mice infected with H3N2 influenza virus

It has non antimicrobial organ protective mechanisms as well.

I am therefore going to be taking Doxycyline 100mg qd from now on as a possible prophylaxis. I have nothing to lose.

Write up on tetracyclines.

A group of animals were pretreated with DOX resulting in decreased gelatinase activity, decreased inflammation, and notable decrease in histological lung epithelial lesions. Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) develops in the setting of diseases such as sepsis. With ARDS an infiltration of the lungs by neutrophils can lead to a massive activation of the cells yielding local tissue destruction and possibly the death of the subject. The destruction of lung tissue can be documented in bronchial lavage by the presence of protease such as elastases, MMP, collagen, and elastin fragments. In a study by Steinberg et al. (83) the prophylactic use of the CMT COL-3 was examined in a chronic insidious onset animal model of sepsis-induced ARDS. COL-3 prevented the development of ARDS and also prevented septic shock. The emergence of new epidemics where ARDS may be an important component to the cause of severe disease or death raises the spectrum of the possible use of tetracyclines to prevent or limit the development of respiratory system complications. Such is the case for H1N1 influenza and SARS (severe acute respiratory distress syndrome caused by a coronavirus).

Pfizer makes Vibramycin but doxycycline is already generic. Still might be a punt to buy Pfizer stock. Who knows maybe an effective treatment for covid19 is simple doxycycline.

hurry doc. better alert who’s that (i mean “who”) and if it works out as a preventive measure you may be credited with this groundbreaking life-saving discovery.

Just an observation on my part and putting 2+2 but may not equal 4. Nothing ground breaking. Totally by chance if it indeed works.

Anyway I posted on my linkedin. See if any of my doctor links pick up on it.

In the meantime I am going to take it and ask my parents in Singapore to take it too. Nothing to lose. By and large very well tolerated drug.

How bro? You are one of the most learned individuals here. You think tetracycline as prophylaxis against covid19 or influenza is too far fetched? So far I can't find any studies that test this idea.

rna and protein synthesis inhibition is the key i suppose. besides suppressing acne flareups and having a baby’s bottom complexion, you may also deprive the covid virus (and for that matter flu too) or any rna viruses (whether positive-sense or negative-sense) from using protein to latch on to your cells and replicate. in one fell swoop you kill two birds with one stone. what a genius! nobel prize candidate. die die must try on some willing test subjects. wuhan whores with their wayward livelihoods will be willing. of course they must sign waivers freeing you of any liabilities.

Doxycycline is very common antibiotic. Generic. Cheap. Well tolerated.

No harm taking it and see if it helps prevent spread in willing patients.

@Leongsam hey boss. What do you think? Worth taking doxycyline 100mg a day as prophylaxis?

Till this date, I don’t know how my box of E-coli gained extra anti-biotic resistance against tetracycline, and leucomycin.
It’s supposed to be penicillin resistant only :confused::confused:

edit, not amoxicillin but tryptophan. fuck... been so long I can’t remember...

You work in lab?

Anyway, just to add on, if you recalled my blood in my phlegm episode, the clarithomycin 250mg seemed to help ease the symptoms.

Macrolide. Also works on inhibitions of protein synthesis. Works on RNA too
