I don't believe in wastage, whether it's food, water, electricity, clothing or whatever, but not because of wanting to save the earth. Just think it's frivolous and spoilt to waste stuff.
One reason is because many years ago, during schooldays and the early years of work, I would inevitably encounter the "double standard save the earth" activist. Usually a singkie girl/woman.
If you happen to print or copy something which she deems to be unnecessary, she would immediately shriek and indignantly proclaim that we were killing trees. However, if we happened to be walking along the road and the works department were chopping down trees for whatever reason, suddenly it wouldn't matter. She would claim that the trees were overhanging, even if they were not. Ask her to go and lobby the works department and she would go into another tirade. I guess she only saves the earth when it's her schoolmate or colleague who is doing something deemed "not right".
When it's inconvenient or difficult for her to say or do anything, suddenly saving the earth is not so important after all. And of course when lunchtime comes, the tissues will come out and be used. Ever heard of a handkerchief? After lunch, out comes the makeup. Save the earth anyone?
Another more important reason is this. Why should the earth be saved and the human race be allowed to continue in existence indefinitely? If humans use natural resources excessively and they are depleted, then humans should become depleted/extinct. There is no sovereign right for this particular species to continue forever. If you feel really strongly about continuing indefinitely, then walk the talk and do something substantial.
