TWITTER's latest purge of fake accounts has seen celebs like Justin Bieber and Katy Perry lose millions of followers.
Pop star Perry – who has the most-followed account on the platform – suffered a massive drop of 1.5million followers.

Taylor Swift lost roughly 2million followers

The singer saw her follower count slashed by 1.4 percent from 109.61million down to 108.1 million followers.
Newly-engaged Bieber suffered a dip of 1.3 percent after losing 1.4million followers, bringing his new total to 105.31million followers.
Rihanna, Ellen DeGeneres, Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga also lost around 2million followers each, according to Variety.
But former US president Barack Obama beat them after his followers shrank by 2.1million from his previous 103.63 million, leaving him at 101 million.
Twitter's biggest losers
The accounts hit the hardest by Twitter's latest purge....
  • Katy Perry – down 1.5million followers
  • Justin Bieber – down 1.4million followers
  • Barack Obama – down 2.1million followers
  • Ellen DeGeneres – down 2million followers
  • Taylor Swift – down 2million followers
  • Lady Gaga – down 2million followers
  • Christiano Ronaldo – down 1.2million followers
  • YouTube – down 2million followers
  • Twitter – down 7.5million followers
Meanwhile his successor Donald Trump – whose Twitter tirades are as divisive as his politics – lost a mere 340,000 followers, taking him from 53.4million to 53.1million.
Other losers include the official YouTube account (down 2million) and Christiano Ronaldo (down more than 1million).
Surprisingly, it was Twitter's primary account that took the brunt of the impact – dropping 12 percent from 62.85 million to 55.35 million followers.

The company announced on Wednesday that it was wiping these suspicious profiles from follower counts – the little tally on your Twitter page that shows how many people follow you – with the Washington Post noting that 70million accounts in total had been axed.
To put that figure into perspective, Twitter as a whole boasts 336million monthly active users, though it's unclear how many members it has overall.

Ellen DeGeneres saw her followers dip by 2million
"Most people will see a change of four followers or fewer; others with larger follower counts will experience a more significant drop," said Vijaya Gadde, Twitter's legal, policy and trust and safety lead in a blog post announcing the cull.
Twitter has been grappling with shady bots and spam accounts (automated profiles that aren't run by humans) on its service for years.
A 2017 study pegged the amount of bots on the platform at 48million.
And earlier this year a New York Times investigation revealed that millions of these fake accounts were created to help celebs sell products and boost follower counts for influencers.
But Twitter claims that this latest clampdown mainly targeted accounts created by real people. There's also no evidence that these celebs purchased the accounts they just lost.

Obama Loses 2 Million Followers in Twitter’s Crackdown on Fake Accounts
RTR2OJOJ_1_j1naij

Reuters

Former President Barack Obama lost more than 2 million Twitter followers on Thursday as the social-networking platform launched a new crackdown on fake accounts, according to a preliminary analysis from The Daily Beast.
At press time, the Twitter purge had cost Obama 2,346,119 followers, or more than two percent of his audience on the site. With more than 101 million remaining followers, Obama remains the third most-followed person on the site, a few million followers behind singers Katy Perry and Justin Bieber.
Other major political accounts were also hit by the purge, with President Trump losing 325,038 followers so far, a 0.7-percent decrease. As the first day of the Twitter purge wrapped up, Trump had more than 53 million followers left.
Twitter announced Wednesday that it would start deleting accounts that had been locked on suspicion of being hacked or used for spam. The accounts were already unable to post to the site, but after they’re deleted they’ll no longer appear in follower accounts, which are seen as indicative of influence or prestige on Twitter.
Twitter aimed to change that starting Thursday, deleting tens of millions of locked accounts. Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey was himself affected by the change, tweeting that he had lost 200,000 followers in the purge.

Fake Twitter users: Celebrities lose followers amid crackdown

  • 12 July 2018

Some of the world's biggest celebrities have lost millions of Twitter followers after the company cracked down on "locked" accounts.
US singer Katy Perry, the most-followed user on Twitter, and Lady Gaga lost about 2.5 million followers. Barack Obama went down 2.1 million.
Twitter said it had taken the decision due to its "ongoing and global effort to build trust".
It follows renewed scrutiny over fake news and users on social media.
The new measures mean that any user whose account is locked for unusual activity - such as being blocked or sending unusual volumes of Tweets - and who did not respond to a prompt to verify their identity would be excluded from Twitter follower counts.
The head of the company's legal team, Vijaya Gadde, said that most accounts would only lose around four followers as a result of the new measures.
But she warned that more popular accounts would "experience a more significant drop".

Nowhere has this been more true than with Twitter's own account on the platform, which lost 7.7 million followers.
Twitter argued that the recent move was aimed at building users' confidence and reflected the fact that follower counts are "a visible feature" on the platform.
In January, New York's chief prosecutor said the state had launched an investigation into a company, which allegedly sold millions of fake followers to social media users.

Did President Trump’s Twitter Account Gain Five Million New Bot Followers in Three Days?
According to archived images of Trump's Twitter page, rumors of a surge in followers were greatly exaggerated.

twitter_app_fb.jpg

CLAIM

President Donald Trump got five million new Twitter followers in three days, and most of them are bots.
RATING

Mostly False
WHAT'S TRUE

President Trump, like other Twitter users with large followings, has a large number of new followers that appear to be bots or inauthentic, automated user profiles.
WHAT'S FALSE

Trump did not receive an influx of five million new Twitter followers in three days.
ORIGIN

On 30 May 2017, the web site Empty Lighthouse Magazine reported that President Donald Trump’s Twitter account gained 5 million new followers in three days — the bulk of which were fake, automated profiles known as “bots”:
According to numerous reports, Donald Trump’s Twitter account has grown by 5 million followers in the last three days. Previously, Trump’s Twitter growth was relatively steady. So it’s interesting to see such dramatic growth over such a short period of time. But what’s more interesting is the fact that the vast majority of these new followers are bots — fake computerized followers. So what’s going on?
Trump had around 25 million followers only a few days ago. Suddenly now, he has over 30 million followers. This growth is very much unlike what we have seen in the past. So we decided to do some investigation into who trumps new followers are.
In our audit, we found that most of the new followers that Trump is received are people with no names (or dictionary word names) and a number appended.
According to archived snapshots of President Trump’s Twitter account, he did not gain a net five million followers in the three days prior to 30 May 2017. As of the end of the month, Trump’s personal account has a total of 31 million — he gained 3 million new followers for the entire month of May. According to archives, it has taken Trump since the beginning of March to gain a total of 5 million new followers.
Here is an archived image of President Trump’s account from 3 March 2017:

As of 1 May 2017, the president’s Twitter following was 28.5 million:

The most recent screenshot of President Trump’s account, taken on 31 May 2017, shows he has 31 million followers:

According to TwitterAudit, a web site that analyzes Twitter accounts, 51 percent of the president’s followers own authentic profiles. The quality of his following has deteriorated since his January 2017 inauguration. As of 29 January 2017, 73 percent of Trump’s followers were authentic Twitter users. Data generated by TwitterAudit shows as of 1 May 2017, 63 percent of Trump’s followers were authentic.
That number steadily degraded through the month of May — although TwitterAudit’s David Caplan cautioned that the margin of error for the fraction representing “real” users is large because of the large numbers in play.
Although many of Trump’s new followers do appear to be fake accounts that do not belong to actual people, the phenomenon is not specific to him. Recent followers to accounts like Kim Kardashian, Katy Perry and even CNN Breaking News that have larger followings seem to be experiencing the same pattern.

Twitter’s wiping tens of millions of accounts from its platform
Check your follower count.

If you see a decline in your Twitter following over the next few days, you can blame, well, Twitter — and the fact that those accounts probably weren’t real in the first place.
Starting this week, Twitter will begin removing tens of millions of suspicious and fake accounts from its platform’s follower counts in an effort to clean up the site. Specifically, it will remove locked accounts — suspicious accounts it puts a temporary lock on until owners validate them and change their passwords. According to the New York Times, this change will result in users collectively losing tens of millions of followers. It will reduce the total combined Twitter follower count by an estimated 6 percent, a Twitter spokesperson said in an email.
Vijaya Gadde, Twitter’s legal, policy, and trust and safety head, acknowledged that some people won’t be pleased to see their followings fall in a blog post explaining the decision. “We understand this may be hard for some, but we believe accuracy and transparency make Twitter a more trusted service for public conversation,” she wrote.
The initial purge will take a few days to complete, but the maneuver is already having an impact: the Washington Post’s Elizabeth Dwoskin reported that President Donald Trump’s following count has already fallen by 100,000, and Barack Obama’s is down 400,000.

Twitter estimated in its blog post that most users will lose four followers at most. But the decision could have a bigger impact on users who bought followers to inflate their Twitter followings. (That probably isn’t the case with Trump and Obama — a lot of fake accounts were likely just following them.)
The New York Times ran an exposé in January on a single company named Devumi that sells Twitter followers and retweets for as little as a penny per account. Among Devumi’s customers: Louise Linton, wife of Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin; Randy Bryce, Democratic candidate for Congress in Wisconsin; and Kathy Ireland, former model and licensing entrepreneur. Former American Idol contestant Clay Aiken bought retweets for his complaint about Volvo:

CEO Jack Dorsey warned in a tweet that follower numbers on many profiles may go down. The company says the decision is part of an effort to “encourage healthy conversation” on Twitter.

Twitter’s upping efforts to fight the troll army online. It’s not yet clear if it will be enough.
Twitter has been increasing its efforts to crack down on spam and malicious activity. In June, it laid out some of its work in a blog post, saying in May 2018 it had “identified and challenged” nearly 10 million spammy or automated accounts per week, up from 6.4 million in December 2017 and 3.2 million in September.
The Washington Post over the weekend reported that Twitter had more than doubled the pace of its bot-policing efforts since October 2017, axing 70 million accounts in May and June and keeping up that rate in July. It’s part of its efforts to rein in activity by bots and trolls and prevent a repeat of Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election and, more broadly, to address the multitude of fake accounts on the platform.
The report got a reaction from President Donald Trump, who tweeted that Twitter should delete the accounts of the Times and the Post, neither of which are suspicious or fake.

Ned Segal, Twitter’s CFO, sought to clarify the Post’s reporting in a series of tweets, saying most accounts removed were not included in the company’s reported user metrics. That’s presumably to calm investors about the possibility of its account purge affecting user growth metrics, which the Post’s report suggested it would.

To be sure, Twitter’s locked account purge, and even its bot army policing efforts, aren’t going to solve all of Twitter’s problems, especially when it comes to abusive behavior online. Locked accounts aren’t the ones engaging in bullying, racist and sexist comments, and personal attacks on Twitter. People are, and Twitter hasn’t solved that one.

Trump Has 15 Million Fake Twitter Followers

He often denounces "fake news" but it appears that on Twitter, President Donald Trump has a lot of fake followers.
A survey has shown that of the tweeter-in-chief’s more than 52 million followers, over a quarter are not real people.
Some 29 percent, or around 15 million, are fake accounts, according to a survey by Gallup, and his following of real people is closer to 37 million.

By comparison, Trump's predecessor Barack Obama has 15 percent fake users among his 103 million followers.
While Trump has boasted that social media allows him to get an “honest and unfiltered message out,” only 8 percent of Americans read his tweets directly from Twitter.
In fact, the mainstream media he criticizes as “FAKE MSM" are the most effective in disseminating his messages, with 76 percent of people hearing about his tweets via other news outlets.

The study also showed that Democrats are more likely than Republicans to pay attention to his tweets. Only five percent of Democrats follow the president, but nearly two-thirds of them take notice of his musings.
In contrast, 15 percent of Republicans follow him and only around half pay attention to his posts.
The survey carried out this month of 2,806 people has a margin of error of 3 percentage points. It concludes that Trump’s tweets reach the public because mainstream news outlets simply repackage them.
“In some ways, then, Twitter functions for Trump much like an old-fashioned press release or press conference statement. Few Americans see or read his tweets directly, but many ultimately hear about them via media coverage or other means,” Gallup said.
Trump once said that posting on Twitter is like owning your own newspaper but “without the losses.” However, it has emerged that his artless style on the social media platform could be intentional, with the help of staff.
West Wing insiders who draft proposed tweets said they deliberately use suspect grammar and syntax to mimic their boss’s style, The Atlantic reported.
If a White House employee wants Trump to tweet about a topic, the official will send three or four sample tweets to the president, who will pick his favorite. They may use poor grammar, but they would not misspell words or names on purpose.
“Tweets that are proposed are in his voice. You want to do it in a way that fits his style,” an insider told the publication.
