Trump: Can't stand India's tariffs on American products anymore
2019-07-10 20:49

According to a comprehensive foreign media report, US President Trump issued a statement on Twitter on Tuesday that the United States no longer intends to tolerate India’s tariff on US goods.

He wrote in the tweet, "India has long taken the opportunity to impose tariffs on US goods. It is no longer acceptable!" And last month, Trump asked India to "revoke tariffs," he said at the time. "I look forward to talking with Indian Prime Minister Modi about this fact. India has imposed high tariffs on the United States for many years and has recently increased tariffs. This is unacceptable. These tariffs must be revoked!"

The United States officially canceled the GSP treatment previously granted to India on June 5. In response, India announced plans in June to further increase tariffs on dozens of commodities in the United States, including chickpeas - up to 60% and lentils - up to 30%. In addition, plans are being made to increase tariffs on certain types of almonds, walnuts, apples and pears, as well as boric acid, flat stainless steel, pipes and some other metal products.

In March last year, the United States imposed tariffs on imported steel and aluminum products at 25% and 10% respectively. This tariff applies to all countries that supply products to the United States. In response, EU countries imposed a 25% import tariff on US goods worth 2.8 billion euros. Some other countries, including India, are also opposed to this behavior in Washington.

It is understood that India planned to increase US import tariffs in August last year, but has repeatedly postponed such a decision. The Indian government explained that the delay was because it continued to negotiate with the United States on tariff issues. According to the Indian Economic Times and its sources, a large US trade delegation will visit New Delhi in the next few days. This visit will mark the resumption of dialogue between the two countries on import tariffs.
