Religion is used to bear testimony for individuals; i.e. individuals are using the goodwill built up by the history of a religion to make oneself "look good". Ironically, Jesus wants individuals to bear testimony for Him.

Actually bad-mouthing is equally bad. If we follow the chinese version of the 5 precepts seems that she only bothers about the one on killing and not the one on false speech.

one of the conditions in the 5 precepts is NO KILLING which i think refer more to no killing of human being. if there were to be no killing in general, then there won't be food on the table and everyone would become a vegan.

only as a human could one practise DHARMA.

the shoo-ing of harmful insects without killing as related by most buddhist nuns and monks is totally impractical and hypocritical.

say there's a dengue mozzie about to sting u. as a staunch buddhist, u shoo it away. mozzie by nature feed on blood and spread fatal disease. when u shoo off that mozzie, it may fly to the neighbour and feed on a helpless sleeping child. that poor kid could be infected by dengue fever and could die from it as a result.

who then is the killer - the mozzie or the one who instead of squashing it shoo it off? obviously, it's the one who shoo-ed it off and in return caused the death of the innocent kid. compassion to the mozzie and by karmic return bring harm to another person. is that compassion?

compassion should be practised with wisdom and not blind dummy compassion. something the buddhist fraternity should rectify and come their common sense.

pests such as swarm of locusts attacking padi fields or other crops, must we be compassionate to kill or spare?

for buddhists adhering to the "no killing"precept, then many humans would go hungry with all their crops being destroyed.

there was a nun who gave a really funny answer. she said "talk to the insect....and it would leave u alone.." going nutz confirmed!

even if other harmful beings such as mosquitoes, bedbugs, lices etc? won't sparing them bring harm or even death to human who should be the priority beneficiary of compassion? then were once the bubonic plague spreading rats which caused many deaths. if such vermins were eradicated, perhap that deadly catastrophe could have been avoided.

buddhist practitioners should be aware about WISDOM IN COMPASSION and not blind dummy compassion which i notice could be an ignorant attachment and hindrance.
